Burnt Hobby Wing ESC
« on: January 26, 2015, 06:55:03 PM »
Well it looks OK, and it doesn't smell burnt, but I guess that doesn't mean anything.

For those of you who weren't there on Saturday, I was the victim of plugging in my own esc backwards.  At least it was a cheap speedo - there's always a silver lining!

The caps are usually what pop when plugged in backwards. Do they smell burnt. Sometime you can replace them and get it working.

The cap didnt pop, the negative wire became so hot it melted the solder joint.  There was some smoke, not sure where it came from.

Usually it's a FET that goes. They behave like a diode, and will let the smoke out when connected backwards.

I'd say it's done. I tried another cap on there and if the motor does spin all it does is growl and chatter.

one thing you might check is the booster your using as well. or if you have a two cell battery remove the booster and try that to diagnose.

i did test out my speed passion and it works just fine as tested in 2s. i dont have any boosters to try 1s but if you wanted a cheap esc,  i could pass it on for like.. race fees or something.

As Gordon said I have a few boosters if you want to try. Did you melt the negative wire to the battery or the negative wire in the esc to receiver? I made the mistake of plugging in the booster backwards and fried a booster and melted the black neg wire from esc to receiver. Replaced the booster and wire and working fine now.
