black piston and head?

I have an AE12 with a conrod thats gone, and the last time i ran it i fried 2 glow plugs, so i put it on the shelf.
Got a new conrod today so i am taking it apart and the top of the piston and head is quite black. Last time it was apart is was normal brown. Is this a byproduct of blowing glow plugs or do i have another problem?

thanks for putting my fears to rest.
Im going to start it up today at home and if its ok ill take it out and run it tonight at juan de fuca
