First Carpet Club Race this Saturday, October 8th

This Saturday evening is our first Fall carpet club race.  Doors open at 4:00pm and track setup starts at 4:15pm.  All local racers are expected to help with track setup (reasonable exceptions are fine).  Some notes:

  • New Track Storage: As most are aware, the track equipment will be stored in a different location this year.  Please be patient and work together on setup/teardown until we get this process optimized to an IROCC standard.
  • New Pit Area: We'll be pitting inside the rink this year, between the players benches and the track straightaway.  If you are nervous about spilling something, bring an old towel to put under your table.  Please wear regular sneakers and NOT heavy work boots.
  • New Track Setup: We'll be building a new track layout for the first night which will take extra time.  We'll then run an extended practice session, followed by two qualifiers and one main.  Future race nights will run three qualifiers and one main.
  • Tables/Chairs: Eagle Ridge has some tables for our use, but not enough for everyone.  If you have a small table, it would be wise to bring it along.  You MUST bring your own chair.
  • Payment: Cash and E-Transfers are accepted.  The E-Transfer email address is the same as last Fall.  Message me privately if you need this address.
  • TC Rubber Tires: The club will have touring car rubber tires on hand for purchase.  They are the same tire that most racers used last Fall.  These tires are not mandatory, but they are a good choice.
  • Traction Compound: SXT is the only permitted traction compound.

Important Quick Tips for Race #1
Follow these tips if you want to have fun at Race #1.  The car must be race ready, with the battery installed, before making these measurements:

Touring Car

12th Scale Car
  • Ride height should be set somewhere between 3.2mm and 3.6mm.
  • Body height should be set to 8mm.

Front Tires
  • Same applies to 12th Scale front tires.

Excellent First Carpet Race!
Thanks to everyone who made it out for our first carpet race of the season on Saturday.  Setup was a little slow because of the new storage space and the extra time needed to build a new track layout.  It should be a LOT quicker at the next race now that the layout is chalked and all the corners are preassembled.  The storage setup requires a bit of a chain-gang to get the equipment out onto the rink surface.  We will get quicker at this as we go.

I was impressed with everyone's pace for the first carpet race of the season - especially given the patchy traction of the new layout.  We all got up to speed quickly, including the new racers!

The vibe in the pits was great!  The new pit setup is a little more "communal" which is nice.  I saw lots of people pitching in to help new drivers which is always great to see.  Big shout-out to new racer Wendell C for reviving two loaner cars for the club and for spending time with a new prospective racer to get him on the track.

Finally, congrats to Paul Y for his strong run in the 12th Scale B-Main, besting his dad for the first time.  I figured this was coming at some point!

Next Race is Saturday Oct 22
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Big Race Night!
Thanks to everyone who made it out for racing on Saturday.  We had one of our largest turnouts in recent memory which was great to see.  Setup and teardown were very quick and efficient with everyone pitching in.  Extra special shoutout to Brian B, Craig R, Dan L, Joe F, and Rob F for doing a lot of the heavy lifting in and out of the storage area.  These guys are always quick to volunteer for that job - thanks guys!

I have to say how impressed I was with everyone in the novice heat.  Austin, Brodie, Cooper, Mark, and Matthew all did super well with clean runs and personal bests for all!  Cooper and Mark are brand new this year, and Austin, Brodie, and Matthew all went next-level compared to last year.  Everyone in this group was about the same pace so it really made for some fun racing.

At the sharpest end of the stick, the TC main was one of the best we've ever seen.  These guys put on a show with some ultra-tight clean racing.  Congrats to Brian A for emerging victorious in this one - well earned.  Honorable mentions to Craig R for setting TQ, and to Glenn A for setting the fastest lap of the night.

In the middle we saw lots of competitive racing.  Notable performances were Chris C, Jay J, and Neil J making exciting bump-up runs, and Daryl J being the "best of the rest" in TC.

It was great to see Matt S back on the carpet after a decade away, and of course Jarrod H once again proved he can always run competitively even with his sporadic attendance.

Final shoutout goes to Nick F for introducing us to Liberty Kitchen for dinner after racing!

Next Race is Saturday Nov 5
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Fun Race Night!
Thanks to everyone who made it out for racing on Saturday.  We had a good turnout and lots of fun racing!

Congrats to Austen F and Mark L for taking the bumps out of the novice group!  Austen has been running very smooth this Fall, and Mark is already getting more consistent after just his second race date.

Brian A was once again the person to beat in Touring Car setting TQ and taking a wire-to-wire win.

Shoutout to Daryl J for an awesome run in the 12th Scale B-Main, making a clean last-lap pass on Brian A for the second bump spot.  Great finish there!

In the 12th Scale A-Main, Craig had the fastest car but had some bad luck, while Tom Y, Dalyn S, and Blake B had a good run, never separated by more than a corner for the full main.

Next Race is Saturday Dec 3
We have an extended break at the moment.  The next race is Saturday Dec 3rd, 2022.  Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Thanks to all who made it out to racing this past weekend.

We had a lower than normal turn-out, which allowed for a more relaxed program.

We also saw some new racers turn out, which was great to see!

Matthew Cady managed to pull off an upset to finish better than his Dad, Phill. I'm sure he won't let his Dad off the hook either!

The TC Stock main turned out to be a clinic put on by Brian A, outclassing the rest of the field. There was some excellent door to door racing, but in the end nobody could keep up to the TQ and first place finisher.

The 1/12 scale class was similar, with Craig R dominating both qualifying and the main event.

Race results and points are available in the usual location.

Next race day is December 17th.

Thanks for everyone that came out for the last race of 2022 and the first points series of the winter season.

We had some fresh faces show up, and Avelyn impressed all with her steady improvement through the night and blazing fast corner marshalling.

There was great racing throughout the field.

Race results and points are at the usual location.

Next series starts Jan 14.

Fun Race Night!
Thanks to everyone who made it out for racing on Saturday.  We had a good turnout and lots of fun racing!  Special thanks to the guys working the players benches to get our equipment in and out.  There are a few of you that always step up, in particular Brian B.  It's much appreciated and it helps our track setup go smoothly.

Congrats to Brian A who was dominant in TC all night, with no one really able to challenge him.

Shout out to Craig R for taking TQ and the win in 12th Scale with a couple of really strong runs.

It's nice to see Sean B becoming part of the top group in TC, qualifying 5th overall.

Daryl J also had a strong night in TC, qualifying into the A-Main.

Dan L showed some flashes of brilliance, but needs to make a clean race to move to the next level.

It was nice to see Shawn Z back on the track after an extended absence!

Newcomer Ian S joined our novice group and fit in very well until his servo gave out.

Next Race is Saturday Jan 28
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

If you're bored on this off-week, checkout the updated IROCC Analytics app brought to us by our friendly analyst.  The app fits properly on mobile screens now.

Choose your name and race date, and then click the Ranking tab to see how your average lap times and hero laps stacked up that night.

If you really want to geek out, try the Diagnostics tab to see how many of your laps are were better than your seasonal average.  More grey bars to left of the blue dashed line indicates your laps were largely better than your seasonal average.

Friendly reminder that if you are running in the top couple heats in your class, you should be running a ROAR legal motor.  No "outlaw" type motors should be used here.  If you are a new racer then any motor is fine.

See you Saturday!

Another Great Race Night!
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We had a big turnout and saw lots of good racing.  As is typical, some TC drivers in the middle-pack range are over driving a bit, and you will go at least one lap faster if you slow down.

It was great to see Ed M and Alex M back on the track mixing it up at the top of the TC class.

No one seems to have pace to compete with Brian A in TC right now.  Hopefully he gets some challengers next week.

Dan P made his return this week and picked up where he left off.  Always impressive he can find his way into the A-Main when not running regularly.

Dalyn S was back as well, and ran the fastest single laps in 12th Scale, but had some bad luck at the start of the main which kept him out of contention for the win.

Big Race Night for Novices!
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We had a good turnout and lots of good racing.  The Novice heat stole the show with some excellent driving from all our new racers, including three drivers that had never run with IROCC before.

Matthew C and Avelyn C both set personal records with excellent driving in the main.  Dominic M ran his first ever race with IROCC and did exceptionally well finishing 3rd in the main.  Jonathan W and Benjamin W had never run RC cars before but they quickly found their footing on the track.  It was super impressive to see how quickly they caught on with absolutely no prior experience.  Cooper W showed some flashes of brilliance as well, but had a little bad luck with his car staying together.

I want to give a huge shoutout to Dan P, Wendel C, and Glenn A for playing a big role in getting these new racers on the track!  Without you, it doesn't happen.  Thanks guys!

It was great to see Shane A join us for the night!  He hadn't raced in many years but he looked right at home with a Craig R rental ride, making the 12th Scale B-Main in style.

Next Race is Saturday Feb 25
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Fun Race Night
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We had a smaller turnout but lots of big performances.  The Novices once again had a good night with everyone continuing to improve on their lap times.  Big thanks to Avelyn C, Benjamin W, Dominic M, and Jonathan W for volunteering to help marshal multiple times throughout the night!

Brian A set the pace in TC again, but Nick F showed that he can compete.  He had faster laps, including a better Top 15, but had some bad luck which kept him 2nd overall after the main.  Daryl J had his TC working well qualifying in 5th overall for the night.

Jack F ran one of his best 12th Scale runs in the main with 33 laps, while both Blair S and Brian B just missed 35 lap runs.  Rob F had a nice clean 12th B-Main win, but elected to sit out the A-Main so he could call the race for us.

The 12th Scale A-Main was very close between Blake B, Craig R, and TQ holder Dalyn S.  It was anyone's game for the entire eight minutes.

Big thanks again to Wendell C for helping get the club car fixed up after it lost a spur gear!

Setup was probably a record: 30 minutes from start to finish.  Pretty good for a 100' x 48' track.  Let's keep that going please.

Next Race is Saturday Mar 11
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Three dates remain: Mar 11, Mar 25, Apr 8, and possibly an odd ball Apr 29 if enough people can make it.  Check your family calendars.

Hey there, I have a few 10 year olds with Traxxis Rustlers who would like to try their hand in a novice race.

Is novice wide open as far as cars go, or is there anything particular that is required?

Do we just show up on Saturday?

Thanks!
Corey

Our winter racing program uses carpet as the racing surface.

I don't believe the Traxxis truck you mention is appropriate for that surface.

We could probably accommodate those vehicles on our asphalt course we run on during the summer.

We use either 1/10 scale touring cars or 1/12 scale pan cars. The novice class referred to is comprised of novice drivers running touring cars.

We have a loaner car that beginners can borrow at our track. However, as you might imagine it does see its fair share of abuse, and it isn't guaranteed to be in drivable condition on any particular day.

Thanks for the response.

The Rustler is 1/10th scale, but obviously it's more made for an outdoor environment. https://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/rustler-4x4-67064-61

I had thought that the novice class was an "any car" type of situation, so thanks for the clarification. I will keep an eye open for summer racing.  Really I just want to give the boys a feel for racing and get them interested in the technical fun behind it all.

I guess no one is running an outdoor track at this time of year.

Thanks again,
Corey

There is another group in Victoria that runs off-road type cars. They run on a different type of carpet indoors during the winter.

Big Race Night
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We had a good turnout and lots of close battles.

Big shoutout to Nick F for finally ending Brian A's reign on the TC class.  Nick is a natural wheel, and when he puts five minutes together, he is quick.  Congrats Nick!

Ryan Welch made the trip from the Lower Mainland to join us for racing which was great.  Thanks for making the trip Tiny!

Neil J was off the IR (shoulder) and back on track which was great to see!

The novice heat was really good once again, and we even had a brand new racer testing out the club car in practice (Ian/Cameron, please contact me on the website if you see this).

Special mention to newcomer Martin M for pitching-in in a big way during track setup and teardown!  Thanks Martin - it was noticed and appreciated.

Setup was super quick again at about 35 minutes.

Next Race is Saturday Mar 25
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Three dates remain: Mar 25, Apr 8, Apr 29

Fun Race Night
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We had a smaller turnout with quite a few people out sick or on vacation.  Track setup was smooth again, although delayed a few minutes due to a lot of late arrivals.  Teardown was in top form as usual.

The Novices once again had a good night with everyone continuing to improve on their times.  Shoutout to Cameron H for doing incredibly well in his first ever organized RC race!  After trying the club car for a few minutes last week, he ran a full race night and improved each time on the track.  You could tell the muscle memory was forming already.  It helps being young!

Matthew C continues to up his game and he narrowly missed a 19 lap run in the 3rd round.  Great work Matthew!

Blair S experienced a breakout night with his 12th Scale, adding two laps to his career best and finishing 2nd in the B-Main!  Awesome to see.

Wendell C also went next-level by running his season best in TC, and making the A-Main.  His persistence with his car and radio setup definitely paid off, and the new paint was worth at least one tenth.

After missing a few races, Carter H ran strong in 12th Scale and had one of his best A-Main performances of his career with a killer hot lap too.

At the top, Nick F was largely untouchable again in TC, and Blake B, Craig R, and Tom Y showed that the old guys can still get around the track well in 12th Scale.  Two seconds separated these three at the end of the main.

Next Race is Saturday Apr 8
Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Two dates remain: Apr 8 and Apr 29.

Big Easter Race Night
Thanks to everyone who celebrated Easter with IROCC on Saturday night.  We had a great turnout and lots of close battles.

Nick F took care of business again in TC setting up a dead heat with Brian A in the unofficial points championship.  Things could get interesting at the final race of the year on April 29....

Sean B had his TC working well qualifying 2nd overall but had an untimely traction roll in the main which cost him.

Matt S ran his best laps of the season, and had a chance at the A-Main bump, but unfortunately also suffered an ill-timed traction roll.

It was great to see budding airbrush artist Corey H back on the track after a long time away!  Thanks Corey for donating a spare 12th Scale body in nice shape to a possible new racer in the class.

Big shout-out to both Austen F and Mark L.  Both these guys have improved a lot in recent weeks.  We understand their pit crews put in some work since last race and it definitely paid off.  Both had career nights on Saturday.  Keep it up guys!

The novice heat was strong once again.  Benjamin W and Dominic M both showed flashes of brilliance after missing some time.  It was really impressive to see how clean they were running this week.

Finally, the perseverance award goes to new racer Cameron H who was not having much luck with his car staying together (through no fault of his own).  Finally, in the Novice main event, Cameron had a full run and he did super well with a third place finish.  Great work Cameron!

Final Race Night is Saturday Apr 29
Our final indoor race of the season is in three weeks, on Saturday Apr 29.  Doors open at 4:00PM.  We will run a full race program with three qualifiers followed by the mains.

Yes, the date is accurate.  The regular date was unavailable.

Awesome Final Race Night
Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's club race.  We wrapped up our indoor season with a large turnout and lots of close battles.

Congrats to Craig R for doubling up and taking the TQs and Wins in both TC and 12th Scale.  Both his cars were working well all night, and he ran super clean and consistent in the mains.

Daryl J was very quick in TC and he managed to hot lap the entire field in the A-Main.  His car is fairly new to him and he's got it working very nicely!

We had a brand new racer Sam L joining us for the night, courtesy of Dan P.  I was really impressed with how quickly Sam got up to speed given that had never driven a TC before, much less participated in organized onroad racing.  Apparently crawling skills are transferrable!

Biggest shout-out of the night goes to Avery B for going above and beyond in the pits helping new racers get their cars setup and operational.  Avery definitely sacrificed his own wrenching time, and on top of that, he had spent the morning and afternoon travelling home from Texas.  I noticed a few energy drinks in his pit that night....

Summer Season begins Sunday May 28
The Summer asphalt season beings on Sunday May 28th.  Please see the featured post for more information:
