IROCC Display at Shamrocks Game, this Monday Night, Aug 22
« on: August 19, 2005, 02:08:49 PM »
Hey all,

It's official:  IROCC will do a quick demonstration during the second intermission of the Victoria Shamrocks game this coming Monday night, August 22, 2005.

Details:
- Monday night, August 22, 2005
- 8:30PM
- Bear Mountain Arena (beside the velodrome and BMX track at Juan de Fuca rec-center)
- Enter via the Shamrocks entrance
- Free entry into the arena for all IROCCers
- Optionally, come early to watch the whole game for free (game starts at 7:45PM)
- 2300+ spectators
- 10 minute time slot during the second intermission
- Electric cars only

We'll be talking about this at racing on Sunday but here is a quick overview:

We'll be "testing" the facility after racing on Sunday (at 5:30PM) to make sure it'll work for us.  We'll want to test radio reception in the building as well as traction on the polished concrete floor.  We can try foam tires and rubber tires to see what works best.

If all goes well, then we'll come back on Monday night for the big display.  It'd be nice to get as many people out as possible so that we can hold two 4-minute races.  It'd be cool to get at least 10 cars in each race.  The track will be very simple obviously with just a few dots as our guides.  We'll want our huge banner there as well so that people watching will have some way of finding us again.  We'll write up a quick blurb about the club for Cliff Lequesne (Shamrock's announcer) to read over the arena PA system.

This is definitely pretty big exposure for IROCC.  Plus, it's right in our backyard which is ideal.  Let's try and get everyone out there on Monday night!

See ya Sunday,
Blake

We'll have to talk to Craig on Sunday, but basically we'll just be quickly throwing down a few dots and that will be that.  Hopefully Craig can come up with a simple but decent layout that won't attract a lot of head-on collisions.

Oh, and there's not much we can do for a drivers stand.  Bring a folding chair if you need some extra height I guess.

Remember, we have like 8-10 minutes to enter the arena, setup the track and banner, run a couple of races, pack up, and leave.  That's not a lot of time....

We should do a figure-8 with off-road cars, and have a jump at the intersection. . .

ill definately be there

i was thinkin to avoid the colisions, and some unavoidable confusion on the track , get there before the game and quikly draw the track with chalk then just plop the dots down when its time,

i dont know if theyll let us do that but that would be the easiest way

Haha, they'd shoot us if we tried that.  Nope sorry, the floor cannot be defaced in any way.

Blake what's the verdict - did you go down to the arena for a test run?  What's the best compound?  Slicks, treaded or foam?

Hey guys,

Unfortunately I could test only rubber tires while I was there.  It's very, very slippery.  With some decent throttle control you can drift around pretty well.  It sucks for us "racers" but all the people that were there were like "Oh wow!  Cool!  Look at that thing go!  And look at it slide!".  So, I think it'll still be quite entertaining for the crowd.   I'll bring a spray bottle of hair spray that we can use to try and get our tires a little tacky.  This is what the lacrosse players spray on the soles of their shoes to get better traction.

Oh, and radio reception was fine.

They've changed our entrance on us.  Come to the main entrance on the ground floor and I'll be there to let you in for free.  I'll try and tell the people at the Shamrock's entrance to forward you along to the main entrance if you show up there.

See ya all tonight at 8:30PM or earlier.  I will be there at 7:30PM.

Craig was going to make sure that the two ropes, and some dots were there.  Tom, can you bring the IROCC banner along if it's accessible in the trailer?

Thanks,
Blake

I've got the dots, ropes, and banner.

I'll try to be there around 7:30 as well.  It would be nice if I could get a prime sparking pot so that it's easy to bring the stuff in.
