Title: Marshalling 101
Post by: cyrrus on November 23, 2006, 07:22:54 AM
Hey I found this on anther site.  I though I might be good to place on here.  espcially for the new driver that are coming on board from time to time

Marshalling 101 - additions welcome

1 - Be in place 2 minutes before the start of the heat/main so the starter can assess if coverage is provided. Your turn to marshall is when your name is in the previous heat - whether you ran or not.

2 - Do not leave your marshalling position. If a car is disabled remove it from the track and put it down. Someone who is not marshalling will have to come and get it.

3 - Watch your area, not the race. Pay attention.

4 - Don't take unnecessary risks to yourself or the cars still running on the track when trying to marshall.

5 - Don't put a marshalled car in the path of oncoming traffic.

6 - Put marshalled cars down facing the right direction.

7 - Put marshalled cars back on the track in the lane they came off (see item 3)

8 - Use your designated marshalling position - other areas may seem better but may block the drivers view of the track.

9 - No food or drinks while marshalling. It is not breaktime.

10 - If the car is not idling (nitro) or stopped (electric) don't marshall it.

11 - Stay in position until the timekeeper says the race is over. The buzzer says time is up, not that the race is finished.

12 - Suggestion - wear gloves while marshalling

14. When marshaling multiple cars  (leader /lapped car) always marshal the leader first.

I disagree, Monkey - first in, first out.

Quotefirst in, first out.

I agree with that. I thinking more  when the leader and lapped car crash together and require marshalling not individual incidents at nearly the same time in the same general area.

with that said how about

14. When marshaling a leader lapped car collision try to marshal the leader first. To be used at marshals discretion without breaking rules 4,15 and with first in first out considerations.

Good day!

Since this has been talked about in the nitro thread and I did a search and found this. I wish I had read this when I first started as I had no idea what was expected of me. So last race I marshalled for the last half of the nitro race and I ended up going from the far end of the track to the pits several times with a stalled car. Should I do that or just remove the car from the race line and let the pit crew fetch the car?

Thanks Neil.

16. When a driver screams at you for not taking a risk or for hesitating to cross a lane of traffic to get their car, make him wait some more.

you should pass the car to the next marshall so as it gets closer to the pit guy.. Our feel the wrath by letting the car sit there for some drivers will loose it on you. Not me i am calm and collective but my other personality is an ass..lol

Corner marshall a car the way you would like to be corner marshalled.  I always try to go the extra mile to marshall cars as fast as I can, and help with stalled nitro cars etc.

However, knowing that the car was flaming out every half a lap, and the driver was breaking rule #16.   I would have gotten fed up and put it to the side.

Rule #17.  No talking on a cell phone, text messaging, or checking the latest sports scores while corner marshalling.

Shawn.

What about rule #2?

Neil,

Technically, Rule #2 means you should not be running the stalled car across the track.  A nitro racer CANNOT get mad at you for simply placing the stalled car on the outside of the track.  His/her pitperson can run over and get the stalled car.  With that said, if you have an opportunity to get the car "closer" to the pit area, without leaving your post for more than a second or two, go for it.  I will do this, BUT I am always looking back at my corner to make sure no one has crashed there in my absence.  The cars that are still running get first priority.

It's a narrow line, but if you've signed up for Nitro, you've resigned yourself to the fact that marshalling can be dicey.

Especially when there are only two marshals and the rest are doing pit duties.
I think if your pitting for someone and it's also your turn to marshal you should also look after the corner by pit lane.
