Hey guys--
I'm a returning r/c guy from waaay back, having used to race electric offroad in highschool (some time ago - Kyosho Ultimas and Schumacher Cougars ring any bells?). I've been wanting to get back into it for probably a year and a half now, and really wanted to get back into offroad but that scene looks kinda unhealthy in general and extremely unlikely to come alive here so...
The raves about onroad and the general healthiness of the club here have me into it. Even though X-Ray seems to be the car of choice locally, I've got a Losi JRSX-R on the way. I need some input on what to stuff in it, though. I'm pretty healthy budget wise, but I want to stay reasonable.
I was thinking of a Novak GTB to futureproof myself, but I may end up hating racing so I dunno if I need to go right up to the top end immediately. I also have to curb my tendency of overcompensating because I couldn't afford much of the awesome stuff in my previous days. I especially don't want to be one of those guys, who shows up with all the primo gear and runs at the back of the pack.
Motors and batteries, and probably tires, I'll likely get from T-Bang - I want to run 19-turn. But getting a charger has me baffled - I want an AC/DC style is all that I know.
I'm also not too clear on a transmitter. Is Spektrum the way to go these days? If so, which one?
How about bodies? Is the club at all strict about ROAR approval?
Anything else I may want to make sure of as I work myself toward next season? I want all the trick stuff, like a setup station, but I don't think I NEED one yet. Gotta get set up with all the fundamentals first.
Thanks for any advice.
(Ross is the name, by the way)
Welcome back Ross. The Novak GTB is a good choice, as you say, since it can be used on brushless and brushed motors. I don't think you will see the club go brushless just yet but when it comes time to get a charger I would suggest that you get something that is Lipo friendly. With the bad luck we have had with the NiMH batteries there is a chance that we may go that way soon. As far as radio equipment, Spektrum is good whether you go with a high end radio with Spektrum module and receiver or just go with the more economical Spektrum DX2 or DX3. You might also consider trying to track down a AMB personal transponder.
Good luck!! And if you have any further questions, just ask or drop around to Boy's and Girl's Club on Sat. nights between 4&10PM and make yourself known to us. We are always there on Saturdays during the winter.
the novak GTB os a good choice as it is programable
for charger that is lipo ready and AC/DC compatible you might want to look into the Much More AC/DC silent charger platinum
the DX series from spektrum is a pretty good choice but you might want to take a look at the trade buy and sell on RC Tech to see if there is a Little better quailty one for sale
good luck

i would buy the best gears that my budget will allow so that i don't have to upgrade later on if i find myself loving the sport. and for some reason that you don't like rc as much, it is easier to get some of your money back on higher end gears.

Well, the car is together and is slowly getting fitted out. I really like the layout of the Losi car (center mounted battery and motor), but given another chance I would pick up a Corally RDX Phi. The Losi car doesn't come with a spool or one way, or anti roll bars, so I have had to buy them. The wheel hex drives are also nylon, rather than clamp-on aluminum. Oh well, lesson learned.
I replaced all the rod-ends on the suspension with DuBro airplane pieces, which removed any slop from the build-your-own ones that come in the kit. Took some figuring to get the geometry back to stock, but I'm really happy with that little mod.
I've got a Novak GTB mounted, and a Checkpoint Money 19T. Protoform Mazdaspeed6. The rest gets to wait till after Xmas, but I guess I'm really in no hurry (did get your PM, Phil, sorry I haven't responded). I think I'll get a LiPo pack to fart around with (which means I need to get the weighted LiPo tray now, too, argh).
Anyway, still excited and learing lots of stuff.
just remember to change the GTB to brushed mode before taking 'er for a rip
you may want to throw in a stock motor for some time to get used to driving the car
