Title: Richmond/Vancouver Road Trip
Post by: RC51 on July 16, 2009, 12:56:01 PM
Hi, all.

I thought I would start a separate thread to get the logistics sorted out. From what has been posted, the dates for Richmond are 29/30 Aug. We could easily travel over on Saturday AM but from what I understand they also have Friday night practices. We may therefore have two groups going over. Personally, Saturday AM makes sense: catch the 7AM boat, be at the track around 9 (it really is that close) and we are good to go assuming they have a noon-ish start. If it's earlier, then Friday makes sense. In any event, if you are interested in going, post here and I will block book hotel accommodations for us as best I can. Last time we stayed at the Accent Inn which was only 10 minutes to the track. Accommodations on the mainland are a fair bit more expensive than in Kamloops - I think it was approx $115 dbl occupancy. Post away whether you'd be staying Friday and/or Saturday and whether or not you need accommodations.

I will be attending.  Travelling on Saturday morning sounds good to me assuming we can still get a couple hours of practice.  Put me down for a hotel room for the Saturday night.

Count me in for Sat. departure and hotel Sat. nite. Hotel might be more expensive than Kamloops but we won't be wasting money on fuel to race against ourselves.

Hey guys I was in South Richmond today working and was looking around for close hotels to our track. The closest 2 that I found were the Holiday Inn Express Riverport  http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/yvrtr and the Delta Town and Country Inn  http://www.deltainn.com/index.php both seem to have group rates available. Both about 5 min or so away.

Wherever is available with a good rate at the time that I call. Last time which was a week earlier there was some form of convention in the area and it was dificult to get more than 4 rooms together at one location. Likely the town and country.

Hey all,

After chatting with a few people after racing, it looks like this is our current list:

Blake
Daryl
Gerry
Gord
John
Phil
Shawn
Tom
Vince
Glenn? (confirmed?)
Craig (can't confirm 100% but is hopeful obviously)

That's 11-ish people so far.  Between Daryl's canopied truck, and my van, we can carry these people.  Technically we can handle 13 people between our two vehicles.  Even with 8 people in my van I can still load about 9x Rubbermaids in the very back.  Tables, tents, generators, and other Rubbermaids can go in Daryl's truck.  Daryl has a big generator but we might want to consider taking two generators anyway.

It'd be awesome to tip the scales at 15+ people, so hopefully we can get a few more and take along a third vehicle.  Other possibles?
Brian
Bruce
Fantettis
Others?

Is Doug Ball travelling on his own I assume?

Blake
Daryl
Gerry
Gord
John
Phil
Shawn
Tom
Vince
Glenn? (confirmed with me yesterday)
Craig (asked to have a room booked)

Blake

Hey, Blake.

~Matt will be traveling over with Tina.
~Brian confirmed last night. Tina, Brian and I will travel over together
~Mick is considering and has a place to stay
~Keith is considering and has a place to stay

So, room list looks like this insofar as people are 99% confirmed:

Blake
Daryl
Gord and Vince
John
Phil and Brian
Shawn
Tom
Glenn and Gerry
Craig
Matt (and Tina)
Doug (single room)

14 racers and counting! I will book 8 rooms based on dbl occupancy and the assumption of at least one more racer attending and staying with us.

Phil

Ok, thanks for the update Phil.  Possible carpools:

Brian, Phil, (Tina)
(Tina), Matt
Doug
Blake, Tom, Gord, John, Glenn, Vince, Mick?, Keith?
Daryl, Craig, Gerry, Shawn

Daryl and I will have to sort out our vehicles later-on, once we have exact attendees.

Oh, and shotgun Tom or Daryl as known non-snoring roomates!

What do you think, Doug? Please let me know ASAP.

Unfortunately we are in wedding and conference season around that time and several hotels that I tried had zero availability. I also didn't want us humping our loads of kit up and down stairs or an elevator if at all possible, so I kept that in mind. In the end I was able to get the Accent Inn just off Bridgeport Road, ground level exterior access 8 x double rooms. We were fortunate enough to qualify for the group rate, so cost will be $89 per room which is freaking fantastic given the location and time of year. There is an iHop on site as well so breakfast is avail.

Nice work Phil!  That is a really good rate for Vic/Van ANY time of year!

Wondering what Mick/Keith might have arranged for their possible places to stay...?  Will they need rides to other areas of Vancouver?

Hey, Blake. Mick said that if he does go over, Frank B has offered him a place to stay. Keith simply mentioned that he has someone to stay with.

With this many heading over, will you be making a decision about club racing? An early announcement one way or another may make the difference in some fence sitters.

I never realized it was up to Blake to decide when racing happens.

Without Daryl (who insures the truck), Craig (who drives the truck), Blake (who runs the computer), and a bunch of other regulars, I'm not sure if it'll end up being much more than an officially sanctioned Tuesday Night group anyway.

You do have a good point though -- it would be a good idea to have an official policy in place regarding the IROCC schedule with respect to out-of-town race days.

It sounds like there won't be much of anything that weekend in Victoria.

Tom and Phil are correct.  There will be no "Points Racing" at IROCC on Aug 29/30.  With at least half the club (including ALL computer operators) away, there is no chance that the track can be setup for local racing.  Besides, *and this is my personal opinion only*, I fully hope to see as many IROCCers as possible make the return gesture to the Vancouver racers that have been coming our way for the past five years!  And besides-besides: zero days off work, a 15 min drive to Richmond, $20 entry fee, a free shirt... we have no excuse for NOT returning the favour.

Quotewe have no excuse for NOT returning the favour.

Spot-on! We've been encouraging them to do this so it's our turn to reciprocate. My thought is that if we can't garner more numbers from the club, that something like a tri-cities series (maybe for another thread!) would be difficult to make work. We sent 16 to Kamloops one year and we typically see 16 or more from the mainland each year, don't we? Nudge your buddies, gents.

Fantettis? Wassup?
Mark, Don et al?
Trevor and team?

How quickly you forget, not that I'm surprised, but I have set-up and run that POS computer and software before! But as you pointed out, half of the club isn't enough to warrant setting up anything for that Sunday.

Hey all,

I grabbed a list of all our names, classes, transponders, etc... from the computer last Sunday.  I will pass this along to the Vancouver crew so that they can pre-register us early, and not have to worry about it on Saturday morning.

I need to know which classes people are planning on running.  Here are the choices: Stock, Nitro, Pro10, SuperStock, Mini

So far I have this:

Gerry - Nitro
Glenn - Nitro
John - Stock
Blake - Stock + Nitro

Please post here which classes you want to run, and I'll send along the appropriate registration info.

Thanks,
Blake

Hey all,

I discussed this with most of you at racing last Sunday.  This is the carpool plan:

Blake's Van
Blake, Tom*, Gord, John*, Gerry*, Vince

Daryl's Truck
Daryl, Glenn, Shawn, Craig (hopefully)

***IMPORTANT NOTE:  Tom, John, and Gerry must get their racing gear out to Daryl's place for transport.  Blake's van will take six guys but only Blake's, Gord's, and Vince's gear.

Let me know if anyone has any questions.

Blake's Vanpool

I will get a reservation for the 7AM ferry on Saturday morning, Aug 29th.  We will need to leave my house at 5:45AM so that we can pickup Vince and get to the ferry terminal before the 6:30AM deadline.

This means that Tom, Gord, Gerry, and John need to be at my house at about 5:40AM that morning.  Only Gord should have his racing gear with him.  There is room to park cars on my street and it is safe:

4080 Tracey Street, Victoria BC

All the gear that is going in my truck should be here Friday night so it can get loaded in some sort of orderly fashion. I will also need a hand to put the canopy on the truck for security purposes while travelling. So if we could get a couple of people here at the same time, then we can get the canopy on easily. We can line it up on Sunday for those travelling with me.

We can line it up on Sunday for those travelling with me.

Darl, I will be coming by on friday with mine and johns gear.  What time would you like me to show up at your place. I will gladly help you with your canopy.   Also, would it be possble for me to park my truck at your house over the weekend?

Shawn.

Just heard from Doug and he has amended his reservation to include Saturday night only.

Blake, Doug asks that I pass on the following:
** Doug: nitro and pan and Nitro and Pro10
** Syruss: Stock and Pro10

Gordens Generator
Blake, Tom, Gord, Vince, Shawn,

Daryl's Generator
Daryl, Glenn, Craig, Doug, Syruss, John, Gerry, Phil

Will this work or do we need one more Generator?
also don't forget to pack some power bars and cords

Generators:

Daryl is bring both his monster generator AND the club's generator.  Gord is bringing his generator.  Between these three generators we can power all the racers that are coming in Blake's/Daryl's vehicles.

I'm guessing that Brian is bringing his generator for him and Phil.

Not sure about Bruce, Matt, or Doug/Syruss... but they can tap in somewhere.

Oh man... it's a good thing Haddow can't access Western World websites right now...!  Just kidding John; sounds good.

Are you still going to run Stock?

Good to hear about Craig!  He sounded positive yesterday after the QA race; but I didn't think he was 100% yet.

Hey Trevor,

I have six people scheduled for my van, but it has seatbelts for eight, so yes you're more than welcome to join in my carpool.  You'll have to get your racing gear to Daryl's house on Friday night though as my van will not have enough room for that.  Hopefully Daryl's truck isn't getting too full...!  Daryl?

As for sleeping on Saturday night, I'm sure you can get a folding bed and crash with one of the groups.  I personally don't care if you room with Tom and me as long as you don't snore.

Hey, Guys.

Eddie says it will be no prob to reserve on the 7PM sailing back from Tsawassen. Based on what I see every day at my end, a reservation is warranted. Coming home from QA last week at 3:30, the 5 and 7 were sold out.

There is a small mall just down the road with a Subway, Wrap City??, and other stuff.
I don't think there will be room for a Bar-B, Glen. Doug has asked that we bring his stuff back because he will be in a small car and I don't know how much stuff everybody else will be bringing.
Don't forget that I would like to get you all here between 7-7:30, so we can get the canopy on.
Thanks guys.

Yes, Daryl and I have reservations for the 7AM boat on Saturday morning.  It is the earliest possible boat, and there is a buffet onboard.  We have to arrive at the terminal by 6:30AM at the latest otherwise we forfeit the reservations.

I would think that the following weekend will be the busy one because it's Labour Day and school starts on Sept 8th.

I don't mind doing a lunch run with my van if we have to.  Like Daryl said, there is a mall about two mins drive away, with several fast food options.

Tomorrow Morning - Blake's Carpool

Just a reminder that I need Gerry, Gord, John, Tom, and Trevor at my house at about 5:40AM tomorrow morning.  Only Gord should have his racing gear with him.  There is room to park cars on my street and it is safe:

4080 Tracey Street, Victoria BC

We'll pick Vince up at 6AM and be at the ferry by about 6:20AM.

See ya bright and early....

Mike Mitlestead won the touring stock and superstock. Eli Won Mini. I hope you guys had a good time. Hopefully next year we start planing for a race earlier and can get some more sponsors on board. Would have been nice to give out more hardware but we did the best we could in the amount of time, (4 weeks) people couldn't fit us into their budget with such short notice. You guys are a great group. Thanks go out to Tom and Blake for teaching the guys about the computer and to Craig for the syrup application, this race wouldn't have even happened without the support of your club.

It was a great weekend!  I was surprised at the number of entries... somewhere around 95 by my count!  IROCC accounted for about 30 entries, and there were two guys (Franko and Ron) from Washington State.  So that shows that there are a good number of Lower Mainlanders interested in the racing scene.  Hopefully they can take this event and use it as a big stepping stone to building up their club.  Stock and Nitro were the most popular with 28 in Stock and 34 in Nitro!  Crazy.

Mario, Eddie, and Bak Choi are probably still sleeping after doing a LOT of work over the weekend.  Same goes for Jessie (Eli's girlfriend), and the rest of the "BBQ Staff".  I also saw Ryan marshalling a lot of extra races.  They'll need more help from other members, but things are started in the right direction.

Thanks to Gord for helping call quite a few races over the weekend.  That helped them out quite a bit.

We arrived at the ferry terminal on Sunday at about 5:30PM to find a 2+ sailing wait and a completely full compound.  After John sweet talked the ticket agent things were looking up for us and we SQUEAKED on the 8PM in the last 5/6 cars.  We ran into Brian's buddy Oliver Jervais and he was not as lucky... he ended up on the 10PM sailing.  Yikes.
