We will talk it up with nanaimo probably count matt tonia and jamie in.
I am definitely in. I went to this track two weeks ago and it is well worth the five hour drive. Actually, for us Islanders, the Coho ferry makes it only a 3.5 hour drive.
You will need a passport or an Enhanced Drivers License.
I drove my van down by myself last time, but it would be nice to go as a group this time and save some gas costs. American gas is decently priced at around 80c/L.
Lots of time to plan. Don't miss it!
Blake
hmm.. this would be a fun road trip.. never been toa real big race..
I see it's for 4 days would drivers be racing each day a few times?
It's hard to say for sure, but there will likely be one day for practice (Thurs), two days for qualifying (Fri + Sat), and one day for mains (Sun). Depending on turnout, there will probably be two rounds of qualifying on Friday, and another two rounds on Saturday. You would definitely want to run two classes....
Blake
i just booked the time off work.. so im im (as of now.)
anyone else plan on goin?
i need to get my pass port but will try as well
I think it would be cool if the club got Matt to paint up a IROCC paint them. I'm going to try harder to make this one
who knows someone got to win the M-mains

Gord, in case you didn't notice, the bodies that Matt has painted for Mick and I both have maple leafs in them. And Matt's new bodies have a maple leaf on it's hood.

No it's not you I have yet to find any updated info as well

It's still three months away; give it time. Most hype probably won't start until after the Snowbirds race is finished near the end of January.

I want to go as long as I can get the time off work. I think Mick said the entire event is 4 days? Dates? I'll most likely be racing only one class, but I have looked at pictures of these races on RC Car Action and online for 25 years. It would be nice to actually be part of one of these events.

March 24, 2011 - March 27, 2011
We are leaving on the 23rd and returning on the 27th
Gorden
I'm going to hold off on booking a room as I want to see if the CRC guys are going and stay at the same hotel as they are.
That is not a bad idea, but knowing how Frank works, he won't commit to attending until a day before the race!
Blake
Ready to represent Team Canada. Got the time off work. ;D

Starting to look like I might be able to make it too. Rumour has it I am getting land posted, and wont be sailing for acouple of years.. Wont know if I am able to go until around March 14th! ::)
Shawn
Sounds great guys. The more, the merrier.
Blake
I should have lots of time to get my WGT program together by then too.
The Roar Pre-Registration web page is now working the cost is $85.00 per class. No break for a 2nd class it looks like
As it turns out this race is not in the cards for me after all. It's to close to my sons wedding so Blake will be looking after the rooms
as I will not be going.
Gorden
Hi all,
I called the hotel and moved the rooms under my name since Gord will not be attending. We have 5x two-bed, ground floor, non-smoking, rooms for $52 + tax per night. There is no breakfast or anything included with that.
Blake
Hey Blake
Do u need money up front or do we have to book ourselves ?
did my roar membership online.. only 27$.. not bad at all..
Hi John,
No need for money up front. My card is simply *holding* the rooms. You can each pay individually when we are down there.
Blake
Looks like they have done up the official race flyer:
http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachments/electric-road/692624d1294943969-2011-roar-carpet-nationals-timezone-ii-march-24th-27th-2011-roar-carpet-nationals-race-flyer.pdf
Interestingly, it shows Open Practice on Wednesday the 23rd, and Controlled Practice on Thursday the 24th. Does anyone have strong feelings for/against attending the Open Practice on the Wednesday? Might be too much time off work for some...?
Let me know.
Blake
well i booked the 23-27th.. so if interested maybe catch the first boat in the morn and get some laps in? or head down the night of the 22nd?
Interesting classes.
Do I have to get ROAR membership? I have never competed at these world class levels.
Eleven hours of open practice? Awesome. I could probably swing another day.
Yes, you will need a full ROAR membership. J-Roc seems to have obtained his membership online for $27 USD.
Hehe, "world class". This race will most definitely be limited to US and Canadian racers. And, it's hard to say how big the race will be. Last year's Nats barely had as many racers as our Speed Weekend CE... and it was on the East Coast where population is denser. This year's race is a better venue which might help, but it seems that the days of 350->500 entry BIG races are behind us sadly. Our first trip to Cleveland had 520 entries, and four years later it was down to 350 entries. This year it was down to 260.
BUT, of course it will be a TON of fun, and we'll get to see some top caliber racing up close and personal! Oh, and a chance to DRIVE to a big race... we gotta take it. I can't wait!
Blake

Ya but I only got 13.5.if I get another in time I'll run 13.5 12th swell,I still gotta buy another esc for the wgt car
Good day!
Just a heads up, you will need a lipo charging bag at this race. Most of you probably know this but I just wanted to mention it.
Go Team IROCC!
Damn something else to add to the list
ya 85.00 dollars to race 1 class and 27.oo for a roar membership and 80.00 for a hotel then food another 85.00 for 1 more class....No Thanks.
j-rod if you need a 13.5 i have one for ya. it brand new and can borrow it.
A
Ya I am with gotnitro I was planning it out till the price of the classes. Then the cost of food, hotel gas ferry it's about a grand or more to race there. Sorry to say but I am out.
Hi guys,
Yes, a big race can be expensive. However, this race will be the cheapest opportunity you will EVER get. Here is my rough math for a per person cost:
PER PERSON (assuming four people in a car)
----------------
Race entry (2x classes) = $170
ROAR Membership = $27
Hotel (4x nights) = $120
Gas = $40
Ferries = $50
Food = $120
TOTAL = $527 USD
It's an expensive prospect, but you'd pay more than that in flights alone for any other race. Not trying to pressure anyone into coming...!

so all i need now is a esc, nrc has one on order for me already, and to save up the money to go..
ok got my roar member card, and im registered and paid up
cant wait to shred some carpet..
I found this tonight on race tech about the tires....
Gorden
QuoteThe controller tires are for all TC Classes: Jaco Blues must be purchased at track $25.00 per set... WGT: CRC Lilac Tires... must be purchased at track: $26.00 per set.....
you can practice on any tires but must have the registered set's through Tech for the quals and mains.....
we would also like to welcome TOP USA as a class sponsor for the event... Thanks again to Michale and EJ for their support of our event.....
gettin closer.. ;D
dont see to many locals registered yet? just me and daryl so far..

I am going but haven't had time to enter yet.
Yeah I wont be going, no matter what happens. The wife is getting cranky because I basicly havent been around much since that June. The only day off is saturday, and I spend most of that time racing.
Shawn.
Are you guys taking the CDN or Us Ferry down.
Hi Ryan,
I was thinking the US Coho ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles. That is, by far, the shortest/fastest route for us, AND it avoids the border crossing issue altogether. However, if you are looking for a ride, or some sort of carpool, we could travel though Vancouver if needed.
Let me know.
Blake
Have made plans to get down there for a few days. Just on vacation and checking it out -- no racing.
Grabbing a cot in someones room would be awesome.
Hi all,
I just had another look at the race flyer, and the registration deadline is Feb 25th. After that date your entry may be subject to a late fee. Get those entries in!

There are only 27 pit spots left.
If you plan on coming, sign up now!

Hey Jerrod Team ORCA USA has 8 spots reserved.... but some of our drivers will be pitting with their Car manufacturer (?sp) teams or can't make it, so there may already be open spots with us. Hans, Keith, Spoom, Me, Andrew Hardmon from Toronto, Martin Crisp from Toronto?, Canyon? and Travis.
Hi Timezoners,
We have the following Victorians confirmed: Blake, Daryl, Jarrod, JohnB, Rob, and possibly Craig.
We will travel together in my van. I can seat six comfortably, but we will have to be clever with our packing.
We will depart Victoria on Tuesday March 22nd at 4PM on the Coho ferry. If all goes well, we'll return to the Island late on Sunday night.
Blake
cant wait for this trip..
anyone up for runnin a 13.5 12th scale race on the 19th?
Hey Blake, which hotel did IROCC decide on?
Hi Bruce,
We have rooms booked here:
http://woodland-cedarinnexpress.com/
FYI, I believe it has been renamed "Woodland Motel 6" in the last couple of months. Also, there is no longer a continental breakfast available, so we'll visit this diner for breakfasts!
http://rosiesrestaurantusa.com/
Blake
OK it looks like its going to be just 5 of us.
Hey Blake things are looking good over here, thanks for the offer of travel plans.... I'll see you guys at Nats..
3 more days
ya but who's counting, I am ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
If my math Is correct, as Of now there's 197 entries.. And I know of a few big names that aren't on the list yet, so were lookin at over 200 entries..
Time break out the used up 12th scale tires, and hope there's a sharp bit on the tire truer..
everyone got there cars ready??
just finishing mine up.. tomorrow just gotta solder in the new motors..i dont think these cars have ever been this clean..except maybe when they were first built...haha
and ive got a list of parts i need to buy down there aswell..lol

Gorden

Blake
It's 20 after 7 am and wre just about to head for breakfast them were headin to the track for a full day of practice..
is frank or any of the CRC crew there? Have fun and hopefully you car doesnt feel perfect in practice.
Jody
Way to keep us updated guys... :P
See y'all in a few.
Bruce your room is 105, go to the front desk and ask for a key..
Just back at the hotel..a solid 13-14 hours of open practice.. Tomarrow is more practice ::) so another 12 or so hrs..grip levels are already (after 1 day) are at the point of there is no real need to use traction wash, walked the track after it was closed,, and we left tracks into the resturant we went to for dinner..
Wgt tires tomarrow will be tried down to 52 mm 12th scale is more of the same story.. Both my cars were traction riling at 11 this morning.. Track opened at 8am..
I'd put up a few pics but I forgot the cord for my camera
Jody.. Frank didn't make.. Apparently to much to do at the shot.. Bryan wynn (super nice guy) and Paul ? Are here.. Paul lemeux(sp?) is also..
it 10:45pm just got back from the track lots of fast cars traction is awesome bought new 12 scale tires and cut down to 42ml that was good for the day track opens at 7am tomorrow we had motor tec today they made us take our motor apart in front on roar tecs they tested and made us put them back together and they sealed it and labeled it.thats all for today ha jody no frank

Jody
Amen to that... my car sucked in practice so that should mean I'm on the way to an A-Main win! The only Rome representation is Dumper, but there are a few other CRC drivers from other areas here. Frank would not function well here because his "Thomas style" pit space wouldn't really work with the 32"x16" spaces we have to work with.
There are a LOT of Canadians down here which is really cool. Some top not drivers from Ontario and Quebec, as well as Alberta and of course Van/Vic. Probably 15 Canadians in total.
12th 13.5 is quick, and layout loves this class. It's intricate enough to make you work a bit and there are some gambles you can take to make a couple tenths if needed. WGT 13.5 feels a little slow. Tops out half-way down the straight, so you get bored while you're waiting to to get through the sweeper and into the infield. The cars are easy to drive, but hard to turn really fast laps. Rob's right about the tires: if you're not on small tires, you might as well go home.
Controlled practice tomorrow will be nice so you don't have to worry about getting run down by a 3.5 motor on the straight.
Blake
And if you haven't seen a stuck-like-glue 12th scale car running a 3.5 turn brushless motor.. They ate stupid fast.. Never seen cars look so stuck to the track, and goin that fast..
Don't worry I'll be takin some video this weekend

Im sorry but i dont want to see no lovers feed during racing. As J-rod says. kick some but guys
LOL, i was actually looking forward to the lovers feed. I think J-Rod mixed-up his webcam in his hotel room with the webcam at the racetrack.
So watching Live Rc and got to listen to Blake, Rob, Jamie & Darrell race but when it was Jarrods time to race he didnt make it same thing with John.. what the heck man get it together time to represent. I thought I was listening to a race from here....hahaha.. ;) Good luck boys give 'em hell
John was probably still looking for king pins. ;)
Shawn.
Oops wrong speling.. My phone has a auto spell check it always just makes thing worse
ya I didn't make the race because I hadn't had a chance to true down my 12th tires yet and a hole in the outside wall had already claimed 2 or my old used rear tires

What is J-Rod supposed to be running? WGT and 13.5 right?
Looks like Rob had a pretty good WGT run, but his 1/12 was a few laps long, must have had a problem. Blake is running well in both 1/12 and WGT.
Shawn
Roar races suck. They have to tech everything.
1-Motors, they make you break them down so they can check them, then put them back together so they can seal the can.
2- Tires- other than 1/12, they have to be spec tires and all tagged.
3- Bodies- have to be ROAR approved. Hobby Shop has run out of approved bodies and there are a few people looking for bodies.
4- Batteries- ROAR approved.
All have to be OKed and ROAR stamps put on them.
This is all before we even get to run qualifiers. Time lost to all the teching has probably been 11/2-2 hours so far. By the time this race is over, we will have probably spent a total of 4 hours in tech. More time teching than racing.
Good day!
I am glad we don't do that at our races, it takes some of the fun out of it. I hope you all do well and take some pictures!

I dont know. Everyone wants to spec tires to save money (Which is wronge btw), you could issue everyone in TC 2 sets of tires that have the IROCC stamp on it. That would be an effective way to reduce the one run sets that everyone is worried about.
At the european championships this last year, there is 2 Practice Runs, 3 Qualifiers and 3 Mains (Triple A, and Triple B). So you coud run upto 8 races. Normally tires werent monitored, this last year, they limited each driver/car to 3 sets of tires to use as they please. Made for some interesting stratagy.
Shawn
Round 1, race 2/24, and J-rod is a DNS. Jon's currently running in 5/6 (2 DNS's) 8 laps in.
Gotta get back to work!
Looks like J-Rod didnt make his WGT again.
The car speed difference is amazing though, you have some drivers doing 17 second laps, and others doing 12's! That a huge difference in lap times. COme On John!
1st race of 1/12 scale 13.5 is up, and Blake is .5 seconds / lap off the pace of the leader. Daryl broke less than a minute in.
I watched John Bowker's 12th scale race, he didn't do too well. Body dragging or something...

If blown more front bearing in the last 2 days than I have all year back home..
"If blown more front bearing in the last 2 days than I have all year back home.."
I guess you had better stop hitting the boards! ;-)
Did they not tech ur battery already. Why the dq how many. Volts did they say u had. For spending over 500 bucks to race I would be chokedfor not letting u race.
Jarrod and John's World GT race is just about to start!
Looks like Jarrod didn't start his race...
Watching Blake running right now.. Flying in second.. Looking to qual 4th Overall!
Come on Blake!
Yep. Blake had a great race! Finished 2nd, qualified 5th over all in 12th scale 13.5
Jarrod has checked in for his 12th scale 13.5 race! Go Jarrod!

Yeah, I think he lost alittle bit when he came up the slower traffic, he was putting in stronge 12.2's, then dropeed to 13.3 for one lap... That cost him.
The qualifing is starting to really tighten up at the top of the charts.
I dont know whats going on with Robs car, but it looks like he is struggling with it. His lap times are all over the place.
Oh well, back to the renos. Hopefully rob can work out any setup issues tonight and put a good run in tomorrow.
Does anyone know how many qualifiers there are? I heard there was 4.
Sounds like the tech is more to catch cheaters than anything. It's like when the sponsored guys from trinity motors a few years back that put cheater coms in the cans. But I am with Darrell the races suck cause you spend more time in tech than actually racing. And like Gerry said after spending that much cash and be DSQ that would suck. Another reason to follow roar more as a light guideline for racing and having fun than any sort of club friendly racing body. But again good luck guys show them how we do it on the island. Kick some butt.

At the ROAR level there is money on the line though. Advertising dollars, sponsors, and the old adage, "Whats wins on Sunday, sells on monday".
So, you can easily understand why they are so anal. I think our tech inspections for speedweekend is more then enough. We had a pretty good system for the carpet edition, with the checking of ride height and weight before the race. I think it worked quite well, and we did stop acouple of cars from going on the carpet with really low ride height. Not saying people were trying to cheat of course, but when running 3 classes, sometimes things get over looked.
Shawn.
Those tech tools the club use have been used for years and years and it's just a few simple tools for keeping it relatively even for everyone. No arguing no fights. Waiting in tech for an hour is to catch cheaters cause of the advertising etc if they win. I am pretty sure I would not be disappointed if I never attend a ROAR sanctioned race. I dont agree with them and I know they would not miss me lol so they don't need my dollars.
Nevertheless any more info on how our boys are doing.
WGT:
J-Rod #37 (No time entered)
Bowker #35th
Daryl 32nd
Rob 28th
Blake 11th
1/12 13.5 Open:
Daryl 31st
Rob 28th
J-Rod 29th
Blake 8th
1/12 17.5
Bowker 24th
I dont think we had anyone in TC.. TC is for outdoors anyways. :-) Looks like rob had a better run the second round of 1/12. He's with J-Rod and picked up acouple of laps.
Shawn.
look who I found

Nice antenna Blake, it must look great in your pit beside your Hi-IQ while discharging your 2400's at 30 Amps. Remember to clean out the contacts on your speed control before the main!
Just bustin your balls. Good job, looks like the rest of the boys are struggling with the added pressures at a big race (traction, tech, being ready on time, etc). I remember giving up on my 12th modified class my first year at cleveland, seemed too hard to get everything ready even though it was hours between races.

Thanks J-Main, but at least my radio is working. Poor Dumper swapped to a loaner radio today after his DSM unit failed him. He's having a tough weekend so far; I think I'm actually ahead of him in 12th.... Some tough drivers in 12th 13.5 like Blackstock and Hebert. Frank's hopes lie with this newer kid Andrew Knapp who is very fast but doesn't have the experience level of a Blackstock.
Cyrul is dominating the WGT class so I don't think there is much hope for CRC there. Similar story in 12th Mod too.
The first official rounds of qualifiers usually shatter illusions of great performances, and this race is no different. It's tough going out there! At least we haven't been caught up in any of the non-approved equipment issues that others are facing.
Report more tomorrow night.
Blake
Thanks for the pictures and updates guys.
LiveRC video just doesn't do the racing justice. But of course, it is better than nothing. I don't know if the subscribed-to version has better video quality, but it does offer a few different camera angles does it not?
Oh yeah, thanks for running your 'Club' paint schemes, it makes it easier to identify the speeding blurs! ;-)
Dont pay for the LiveRC.. That location only has a single camera. So no improvement. You just dont get cutoff off the video feed, and you dont have the que.. You get video right away. (Which is ajust a blur anyways).
Shawn
Thanks for the pics! Looks like fun, wish I was there.
Of course it isnt a road trip race unless you have a pic from a restaraunt!
Rob, thats not proof..., looks like you are passing the salad over to the person next to you, the waitress is probably just out of view waiting to hand you the triple bacon cheese burger with waffle fries and gravy. LOL. One of the best parts of the NY, Ohio road trip was Applebee's, Denny's , Quaker Steak and lube ( a true USA grease pit) and Champs!
blake hangs on to the A-main after round three, 38 laps in 8 flat. Gotta go quicker in round four, lots of guys around 38 laps
Blake has done really well, looks like he needs more power though. All his laps where within acouple of tenths of each other, so you know he is in complete control. Problem is so are the other guys, and their cars are fast!
Shawn.
Round 4 starts at 2:00pm
Looks like Blake just missed the A Main, I think he is 12th or 13th.
John Bowker's race is up now in 17.5

Yeah thats to bad. I was really hoping blake would make the A.
At IROCCers everywhere. If you thought snoring was bad on road trips, wait till you have a stuck horn in the parking lot. Not mine of course.
Good luck tomorrow guys.

they tech battery voltage before every race.. For 1cell voltage is 4.20 but they allow up to 4.203 if your over that you don't race.. They also check height weight and wing before every race.. And if your to light or don't have the spec tires on when they tech the cars after your race your race didn't happen..
And they are strict on the voltage thing.. Slot of people were dq'd for voltage in the first round.. It's a good thing I lift the volt meter in my tool box it's being shared between about. 8 guys.. Lol
Basicallly I charge my battery the check the voltage , if over 4.2 then I discharge it till it says 4.19.. They put tech stickers on everything , motors bodies batteries tires..

been there, happened to me on the ferry. I was like who is the idiot with the horn, after 30 more seconds I figured out it was me! LOL. That was in the gold rabbit.
I know you guys are hating tech, but it sounds like after they squared away motors at the begining the rest was standard stuff. Other than the battery...but with the LiPo being able to be overcharged to increase voltage I am all for this pre-race test. At a race like speed weekend we can get away with just making an announcement at the drivers meeting saying it is a "gentlemans rule" but at a bigger race like this I would rather have it teched than not. Remember the days of NiMH when people would pay top dollar or fight over the best numbers on thepack, now you can acheive that with any pack with your charger in your pit.
Jarrod Won his 1/12 scale race D-main I think
Daryl & Rob up now
Looks like Blake just finished 5th in the B main 13.5 12th scale. I just caught the VERY end of the results before they moved on to the next race.
John Bowker is now up in 17.5 non timing 12th C Main.
John finished 4th in the C main 17.5 non timing 12th scale.
I didn't realize Paul Lemeiux was sponsored by DEkelz.com! Cool!

No, he got them at this race :) The ones he got at 360 were for 1/8 scale.

So how was the grip? I know you said on RCTECH is was ever changing, but did the grip just keep rising, or did it eventually become chemical soup?
Shawn
At a point the carpet just became a goin slime in the grove.. Me and John walked the track a couple nights after itxwas all done, and left shoe prints at a couple restaurants those night.. Lol you shoes actually start to stick the carpet just like they do on our outdoor track during speedweekend

Heh, yeah, truth is that I was lucky to be where I was after round 3. There were a few racers that hadn't "stepped-up" yet, and they finally got it together in Round4. I controlled my own fate in Round4 but I turned in a sub-par performance after having to pull over a lot for the top six racers in the class! I actually really liked my 12th car and I think it could have placed as high as 7th overall if I could have wheeled a little better. Dumper's weekend continued in the toilet and he sat on the pole for the C-Main!

Yep for sure. I actually liked knowing that I was on a level playing field with everyone else. Pre-race tech was standard and quick. I never waited more than 30 seconds to get through.
The motor tech lineup on the practice day was very long and they could have used another person helping out. That would have increased the entry fees though.

So I read there was some ORCA Controversy? Something like they all got booted out?
Yes, ROAR disallowed their ESC's. I believe there was a problem in the new software, there was some timing added in the "blinky" mode for the non-timing classes. Most of their drivers begged and borrowed ESC's from other racers. Keith didn't bother, he just wandered around the pits and helped people with chassis setup. Some of the driver's actually did better with the borrowed ESC's. Keith was qualified first or second when all this came down Friday night.
yes they did. I think it was because the speed control wasn't submitted early enough for ROAR.
Did they make you use the lipo sacks?
They did mention it but not to many people were using them. I didn't.
Just drove by the oak tree again today..haha
I'm about 45 mins past our hotel in woodland
Grab some hot wings!

Seriously considering a stop on the way back.. Some good food there even better when they screw up and make the bill cheaper than the menu.. Lol
Yep, I think the Alabama woman liked me! 2-piece Halibut for $7.99.
