Hi all,
Here is the plan for summer racing this year:
Classes:
TC 17.5 Stock Non-Boosted and TC Novice
Touring Stock will run with the same rules as last year, with the exception of the ESC settings. We will adhere to ROAR's current "non-boost" formula for Touring Stock. This is the standard for both ROAR and all neighbouring BC and WA State clubs. This allows anyone with an older brushless ESC (ex. Novak GTB) to be on the same horsepower level as anyone with a tricked out Tekin.
*** TC Novice will run as a separate class and is intended to help grow the club with new racers. The hope is that a separate class will entice newcomers to join the club. If we don't have enough racers for a dedicated Novice heat, then we will run them with the lower TC Stock heat but we will score them separately in the points standings. IROCC is looking into the idea of keeping an RTR TC4 kit at the track for people that are interested in joining. The Novice class has no specific motor rules but as racers "mature" in this class, they may be asked to move up to the TC Stock 17.5 class.
World GT 1s 13.5 Boosted/10.5 Non-Boosted
We are going to follow ROAR's standard on this one as well. WGT has taken off in BC and WA State as we saw at all the carpet races this winter. We will keep the WGT standard rules regarding chassis, bodies, batteries, and spec tires. The standard WGT motor rule is 13.5 Boosted but we will allow 10.5 Non-Boosted motors as well. However, after a few weeks of racing we may disallow the 10.5 depending on speeds.
TC Nitro
Usual rules: 0.12 engines and foam tires.
Schedule:
Sat March 12: Indoor Racing
Sat March 19: Last indoor race
Sat March 26: No racing
Sun April 3 : No racing
Sun April 10 : Outdoor track cleanup day
Sun April 17 : First outdoor practice raceday
Sun April 24 : Second outdoor practice raceday
Sun May 1 : First outdoor points raceday
Weekly Race Fees:
Same as the last several summers: $5/class for IROCC members ($10/class for local non-members. Free for non-Islanders.)
Summer Membership Fee:
Same as the last several summers: $20 one-time summer membership fee. You will receive a free day of racing on the day you pay this membership fee.
Two Points Series:
This summer will feature two points series:
Ironman Series: The Ironman point series will count points for every Sunday with one throw-away for every four races. This is the same system as we've run for the last few years.
Casual Series: The Casual point series will count points only on certain Sundays over the summer (roughly every two weeks). There will be a total of about 10 Sundays in the Casual series and there will be 3 throw-aways. This shorter series will allow racers with limited racing availability to compete for points supremacy. The schedule for the Casual series will be posted in the next week or so.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here.

awesome format! I really like the novice class. It would be nice to see the electric touring become super competitive with big fields again as it once was.
World GT, as in no wide cars and GTP bodies?
Cant wait to race a few times this summer.

what about starting the spec tire in June so we can use up old tires 1st

Hi Jody,
Yes, we are hoping to boost numbers in all classes but growth usually starts in Electric Touring and that's why we decided to use an actual "Novice" designation. This way the newcomers are fighting for Top-5 positions in the class, rather than fighting for Top-Honours in the D-Main for example. It's really just a semantic thing, but hopefully it will be enough to raise interest in the club.
World GT will follow the basic WGT rules: 200mm width, approved sports-car bodies, spec WGT tires, 1s battery, 13.5 Boosted (or 10.5 Non-Boosted depending on speed). WGT has a "following" in these parts now and so we have changed our old Pro10 class to the new standard. WGT will run at Speed Weekend this summer and I expect that we'll have a good mix of racers from Vic, Van, Kel, Kam, and WA.

Hi Gord,
You can burn up your old tires on the first two practice racedays, on Tuesday nights, or during morning practice sessions. Otherwise everyone should be on the same spec tires for the actual races.
***NOTE: The Exec will be the first to admit that we don't have concrete proof that the Spec tire will work well on our track. WGT with spec tires was run last summer in California at the pavement ROAR nats and the cars worked fine. Obviously they have a treated surface down there but I would think that our surface would be comparable. So, we are optimistic that the cars/tires will work well. If it turns out to be a disaster, then we may have to adjust the rules.
Long story short: Don't put your old tires on eBay just yet... let's wait until we try the spec setup to see how things work.
Blake
I'm so in for novice! ;-)
GTP handled well but they are awful looking on 10th scale car, especially wide. WGT sounds like a good formula, I have yet to see one run.
WGT is pretty cool on carpet. They're right inbetween a TC-sled and a nimble 12th Scale. Easier to drive than a 12th but will still carve around the corners. I hope our sugar spray will yield just as much fun on the asphalt.
Blake
With the little tire we run I wonder how much wear the pavement will have with the wgt.
Just acouple of comments. I think a 13.5 Boosted will be much quicker then 10.5 Non-Boosted for WGT. I have both motors so maybe I will give it shot as a comparision.
The novice class is also a good idea, and will be interesting to see how many people show up to run that class. It still doesnt address the cost of racing though. Figured a RTR 18R would make a good novice class. Nice and cheap to run.
Shawn.

Hi Shawn,
We considered making the Novice class based on the 18R. But then we found this:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_348/products_id/30217/n/Team-Associated-TC4-Touring-Car-4WD-RTR
An RTR Associated TC4 is a perfect way to get a summer of racing under your belt for $240. Then, if you decide to keep racing, you are at least familiar with the 10th Scale Touring class so you can make a good decision on your next car.

Initially we were going to restrict WGT to the ROAR rule of 13.5-Boosted. But there are some members that have only a 10.5 from Pro10 last year, so we are allowing a Non-Boosted 10.5 for those individuals. If this setup seems too fast (unlikely) then we will have to ban the 10.5 from the class.

Hey Gerry,
I think we'll want to run full-height tires for WGT on asphalt. The extra sidewall flex will help gain some traction. This is the setup I will be trying anyway.

Hi Danny,
Yes, in honour of Jody's summer vacation, we will likely run the Keg Nitro Cup again. Details will be sorted out closer to the date. Also, look for a new points system designed to get more Nitro racers in striking distance of the prizes.
As for Central Saanich Days, it looks like we are a "GO" again as usual. The Lions Club is meeting next Thursday to start discussing the details. I will pass along information as I get it.

Hey Guys;
I tried the speck tire last year with the pan cars, I understand they have better downforce, cause of the body, and mine was one of the wide cars( never hurts) ;D, but it was like a sled in the corners. I could not get it to turn in, I don't know what you guys were using on the front but I had to slow down at the corner. I finally changed back to black fronts, and used the speck rears at times, if not green rears. It was a totally different feeling on the carpet with them cut down smaller, I did run mine full size outside, but they didn't get better the little I wore off them. I finally chopped them for the 360 race. And the WGT motor rule sucks ;), lol. I bought a brand new 10.5 for last summer never used it, at the 360 race Gerry's smoked so I put my 13.5 into his car, and I don't think I would be able to run my WGT with the Novak in it again after Indoor Speed weekend and having a tekin sitting in my 1/12 car that is just sad lol ;). I have had to have lots of therapy to get rid of those memories. Wheel time will tell I guess.
If the spec tires are pushy that actually seems like a good sign. Rear grip was my biggest concern with the spec tires since they seem to be such a long wearing compound. The car might turn-in a little better with half the voltage too....
Definitely will be interesting to see.
Blake
That's right we were running 7.4v ya that would make some serious difference lol.

Although 18R's are cheap, there is a very limited upgrade path from that platform to any other cars that we race. That limits its utility as an entry-level class. Different batteries, motors, ESC's, servos, tires, etc. mean the only thing from an 18R that you can use in anything else are the transponder and receiver.
maybe.. but there a hell of alot of fun to race..lol
Any chance that having an 18r class would bring down some of the Nanaimo crowd?

Hi Danny,
We have told the Nanaimo group that we will run an 18R heat any Sunday that we have enough racers.
Blake
18r or any other added class just seems to water down participation.Look at the attendance drop after speed weekend. my 2 cents
re: Tom's comments about not being able to upgrade to any other cars that we race from an 18R. This is true, but unlike the other cars we run outdoors, the 18R could be run indoors as well without having to open the track layouts like we do to accommodate the 1/10 TC's or WGT class cars. So for Newbies, they could buy an 18R, race it outdoors then change the tires and run it indoors without any great additional expense.
Either way, Cameron will be in the novice class, and he is quite happy about this prospect. I am just hoping I can find some aluminum steering blocks for the T2 (For a half-decent price). Betwee Joe, and Cameron last year, I think they depleted the entire north american supply.
Shawn.

Hi Shane,
Yes, I couldn't agree more about watering down the classes; that's another reason why we kept Novice as a 10th Scale Touring chassis. This way, if we have only two novices on a given day, they can easily run in the lower TC Stock heat.
The idea of offering an 18R heat to Nanaimo is simply to thank them for their great support over the last couple of years, and potentially draw a few of them down our way this summer that would not have otherwise attended. Nanaimo will be busy with their own offroad series for certain Sundays, but I know that Matt and Jamie are hoping to come down and race a few Sundays with us as well. They are most interested in the WGT class, but if they brought down other Nanaimo racers with them, then we would do a heat of 18R for them.

Hi, I'm new to everything RC associated. From what I gather all the racing is for electric cars except for the TC Nitro class and for that you need a 0.12 ci motor. If my math is correct that's about 2.0cc's, with foam tires. Whats the deal if your motor is larger displacement, not naturally aspirated, or want to run rubber tires?
Hi there,
Do you already have a nitro car? If so, what brand and model?
Generally the rule is 2-stroke 0.12ci engines, but there many Ready-To-Run nitro cars available that come with larger motors like 0.15ci and even 0.18ci. These engines are permitted because they come in the RTR kits and we won't turn any newcomers away. Plus, typically, the RTR engines make less horsepower than the racing-style 0.12ci engines. Superchargers and turbos are not allowed, but if you have one, bring it out so we can check it out!
Oh, and you are certainly welcome to use rubber tires. Foam tires will give better performance, but rubbers are totally fine to get started with.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Blake
Yeah, I have a couple 4-tec 3.3's. I'm not really into the whole racing thing, kind of more into just burning tires off and drifting. Not really worried about the foam tires either. The cars don't handle with crap anyway, so I doubt they would make much of a difference.

What about having a 15 or 20 minute practice session just for the novice drivers so they don't have to worry about getting in the way of other drivers? We could have a couple of corners and a couple of veteran drivers giving them tips. This would also be a good time for a walk in to try the club TC4 (if that happens).
Just a thought, Neil.

Just to add on to Neil's idea, I have noticed clubs running seperate practice sessions for the different classes. Possibly a Nitro/electric/novice practice session in rotation. If we could have 2-3 volunteers during the practice time to police it, it would work out pretty good. You can add my name to the volunteer list.
Shawn.
I really like the idea of the novice class ;). I think the practice session is a very good idea too, it would definitely be good to have some experienced racers giving tips to newbies
(like me!). I also like the idea of having a car at the track, because the races get a lot of spectators in the summer. it's a very good idea too get new racers into the club, because they will have driven a car, and if they like they can purchase a car online (from a-main hobbies)or from a racer.
just my input...
Joey

Ouch. The season hasnt even started yet, and your already complaining about people not helping setup?!?! I'll just be happy if we get enough people to race. The numbers at the end of last season, and the numbers after speedweekend Carpet edition were not good. I dont know where everyone is, but we need more people to start showing up on a regular basis.
Shawn.
We could have a person come early with a miniature practice oval that we could practice on, or people could test that day's setup on.
there is plenty of time to practice during the week when the parking lot is empty. Miniracer there is a practice tuesday night normaly every week after the parking lot has been cleaned. Unless you want to show up at 7:00 in the morning sunday as we all start rolling into the parking lot around 9- 9:30 gives u lots of time for practice.
Thank you for letting me know, I did not know that. :)

Your idea is good, but practicing without a track is completely different then what you will have on Sundays. Tuesday night is the "unofficial" practice night. Normally the track is quite visible, and if it didnt rain, there is alot of traction.
When setting your car up, you can get a base line on the tuesday, but you really need to setup the car in race conditions.
Shawn.
I know nothing about setting up a car, so that wont be a problem for me ;).

It's a well known fact that Victoria's weather in April and early May stinks for doing anything outdoors. Every year we have this same discussion and every year people are seemingly disappointed when they find out that Sunday's weather is going to be wet.

Whatever we do, we can't keep everyone happy! I agree with Tom however, running an extra 3 weeks of indoor is a waste of time and energy due to the fact that the 'Diehards' are only doing it for themselves. In my opinion, people who didn't or couldn't show up for whatever reason during indoor racing season shouldn't be suggesting what the rest of us who did show on a regular basis should or shouldn't do!

The TC race was definately alot of fun. Gord and I had quite a race going on for 4/5th for probably 2-3 minutes, and I believe there was also a good 2nd/3rd battle going on as well. I definately didnt have the right motor/timing/FDR combination. Will have to work on that. Curious to know what everyone elses FDR/Timing setup was for their cars.

Yep, it was a cold one out there; especially while running a fever. I hope no one got too close to me!
Colwood seemed to get the worst of the weather. I headed back to town and Gorden Head and it was nice and sunny.
As others have said, it's always a crap shoot at this time of year, but it's better than throwing away our rent money to B&G for 10-car turnouts in April... been there done that.
Like Gerry said, I saw lots of smiles during the first round: especially from Joey after he completed his first ever IROCC qualifier! All six racers in that race finished that race, and we had a good cheering section in pit lane cheering on Joey, Mark, and Cameron! The second group of TC had good racing too, and I felt really bad poking fun at Gord during the race for his ultra-fast car. Turns out he was legal!
The Nitro race was looking really good between Craig and Gerry for the first three minutes or so, and then sadly their pace dropped big time!
It's too bad we couldn't get the WGT heats in since a few people were trying different gearing combos to find the setup.
After 3x boxes of Kleenex, a fair bit of Nyquil, and crazy amounts of snot, I think I am back in action. Hopefully the weather gives us a break this Sunday. See ya there!

IROCC Rent-a-Ride
Hi all,
IROCC has purchased an RTR TC4 kit that will be available for newcomers to try their hand at racing. I have the car and I will bring it out this Sunday. If you know anyone that might be interested in joining our club, you can suggest that they come try the club Rent-a-Ride for a couple of heats. The cost will be the usual: $5. Depending on interest, you might only get a race or two on the Rent-a-Ride, but on a slow day, you might get the whole raceday.
