Title: Race Format
Post by: rcshadow on July 27, 2013, 04:06:16 PM
Now just a thought, was poking around the web and I know some of us have spoken about it, but what about trying a reedy race type of scoring day. Instead of the usual three qualifiers and a main. Since we already do heads up racing, what about having the points for each race. Then everyone has to be more consistent during the day. If ya have to pull off cause the gear ya chose was wrong either stay and try and get points or that's the one throw away for the day. Just putting it out there, for discussion might be nice to change it up for a day and if it's easy or people like it could do it more often. I don't know if one of our computer pros could do up a spreadsheet on the computer and it could tally the points so its not a lot of extra work during the day. Make it a bit different than the norm for a change once in a while.

I like the principle.

Before we used a computer lap timer, we would always run 3 qualifiers and a main, and your top two qualifiers would be used to set the grid for the main.

I've for a long time thought there's too much emphasis on qualifying in R/C racing.

qualifiers being full race length is kind of rediculous to me. maybe have 3-5 2 minute qualifiers and a longer main event. dont see any reason touring cars cant run 8 minute mains when the buggies do.

qualifying points makes sense but kinda deadlocks you to be racing with the guys your seeded with. at least race time allows you to throw down fast times to bump you up into another main. how would points work for that? our indoor points season is a good example as it seems the points range from 100 for first overall, and downward. so someone who is always in the C main never really has a shot to get into the b or a main on points alone.

but, im probably missing something in the format your proposing. Im personally up for running whatever. racing is racing.

The computer should be able to handle this, wouldn't it run more like a single qualifier, then triple mains?

This would definitely make nitro more interesting.. But then we should have 3-10 minute mains for the day. Skip qualifiers all together.

sounds like a great idea. Way too much time spent qualifying in R/C racing. The issue is worse when it is ifmar-style, completely uninteresting to watch.

see attachment for a recent editorial on the subject.

Lets do it! And no im not talking about 3-5 two min qualifiers. That would not be any good at all. One bad corner and your race is over! It would be  impossible to make up any lost time before your race is over! May as well just start drag racing.
