Title: what iv'e been up to. for anyone interested in imports
Post by: valk on March 31, 2015, 03:18:03 AM
I Haven't given up on racing. just took a month or so off to work on something else. trying to put my yellow car away for a hibernation while i decide what to do with it. I paid way too much for it and its kind of rare, limited production.

doesn't cost me anything to keep it now but i wanted to put together a reliable, daily driver that was clean inside and out and still has a little bit of fun. this is a bit of an ongoing project but to start out i needed to get a shell that was rust free, put an engine in it, and there are other mods to follow once all that is accomplished.

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123846964-Project-P5-Rescue!-making-a-clean-Daily-from-two-cars

my yellow one will sit on stands for a few years in the car port with a thick ass coat of wax while i figure out what I want to do with it. originally i picked it up as a inexpensive car to try autocross racing with. of course rc was cheaper and i haven't done anything with it on the race track. now that i don't need it, i could make it really stupid.. 400+ whp and not even spend lots of money to do so.. or i could leave it as a limited production, low and slow cruiser..

who knows. but i wont decide that for a couple of years.

for now, the p5 is gonna get the low and slow treatment, but will also get the msp turbo setup. prob gonna run 10-12 psi for daily driving. trying to keep out of need for a forged bottom end. 10-12 psi will almost double the usable torque to the wheels though and that will be plenty to move a 2600lb wagon around quite quick.

i know most of you older guys esp only believe in muscle cars. but imports have their own things going.

condensed view of the month. i prob put a little over 100 hours into the swap/rebuild. all in my spare time afterwork or on weekends. somepeople question how worth it it is, but those people prob all make more than $50k ;P i gots time, but not so much monies.
aquired the silver car for $375 after the tow, black car was $1000. selling parts from the black car recovered $680, plus the recycling which wasnt stellar but brought it to $720. paint was $200 but i bought extra cleaning chemicals and stuff on the same invoice, so prob closer to $140 in material to paint  the side of the car i did. my time on that project alone, paying myself modestly id prob sell the paintwork for $500 as a hookup. most body shops would have quoted $4-$500 just to paint a bumper so it is definitely a hookup price got a fender and two doors/doorhandles/mirror ect.

the actual rebuild was fairly straight forward as the engine ran perfectly fine from the black donor car. i did swap the brand new timing belt from the silver blown engine with its idlers over, delete some butterflies from the intake manifold, put new gaskets on there and such.
bottom line is i didnt actually spend pocket money on the silver one to get it to road condition. so pretty good project that way.

Now the actual modlist can begin. to come;

Garret GT2554R .64ar
pope performance stainless cast manifold
pope performance 3" downpipe
Racing beat exhaust
Unichip fuel management
Suspension by tokico/eibach

im trying to get my hands on a corksport exhaust but word has it they have dropped the protege platform. the only one i might be able to get my hands on is 80mm which is kind of rediculous for a street car to be daily driven. might do a custom vibrant instead or magnaflow muffler/vibrant resonator on 3" pipe. i want quiet for putting around town and free flowing when i floor it. maybe the dynomax vt with a vibrant ultra quiet resonator.. who knows. racing beat for now.

Decent looking car. I always liked the 5 doors from that generation. There's an Autocross tomorrow at Western Speedway. Just sayin. I'm running in it. Haven't done for a few years, should be interesting with my low-buck soft side wall tires.
