just curious are we going to try and have a speed weekend this winter?
Hey Andrew,
As we mentioned at the Winter General Meeting, the idea is certainly floating around in our heads. There are some logistics issues though which need some research before any decisions can me made. Currently, the B&G gym is used by the wheelchair basketball group every Saturday afternoon until 3PMish. So, we'd have to kick them out, or negotiate a weekend where they wouldn't need the gym.
Then there's the issue of finding space/power for everyone. I'm sure we could do it with proper planning, but the gym is a little tight even with just IROCC in there.
The other major issue is racing classes. Would we stick with our bread and butter and call it a 12th Scale Only race? This would be cool from our perspective but would probably cut out a lot of possible visiting racers from other towns where 12th Scale isn't very popular. Or, do we run Touring Cars as well? This would make the track quite lame for the 12th Scalers but it would likely bring a larger attendance.
So anyway, a winter Speed Weekend is an exciting idea, but at the moment it's just that... an idea.

Quotebut would probably cut out a lot of possible visiting racers from other towns where 12th Scale isn't very popular.
more like "for sure" cut out anyone coming from afar, I think the vancouver crowd as more or less sold off all of their 12th scale cars. Korgae ordered one batch of cars with plans for more but that never happened and I have seen some of those cars up for sale since.
With 30 racers (or more) of our own in one class every week. I say we just have our own 2-day trophy race without any big promotion or advertising. More like mention it to the other clubs without catering to them (ie NO IFMAR STARTS)
I would like to see us try to promote a 1/12 scale race, but have it be a 1/12 scale only race. There were apparently 10 guys with 1/12 scale cars at the Big Chill, and we should be able to attract some of them for a good ol' fashioned 1/12 scale race.
I would not want to put on a combined 1/10 scale and 1/12 scale race myself, since every time I have been involved in one of those races, I left saying to myself that it was a complete waste of time because it sucked so bad. I don't want to be involved in putting on a race that I think sucks, because I would imagine others feel the same way.
I think we should hold a big 1/12 scale race, promote it as a 1/12 scale ONLY race (since I'm sure there are some other people out there who feel like I do), and if people don't show up because we're not putting on a 1/10 scale race, then they wouldn't be running in the class we are trying to promote anyway. I doubt there would be any people who are interested in running 1/12 scale that would decide not to show up because we're not running 1/10 scale. It would be kind of like expecting people to not show up to our summer races because we weren't running an off-road race at the same event.
We might not get the same draw as we did during our summer outdoor race, but we might get a few guys over who like running 1/12 scale on a 1/12 scale track.
Since we've had 38 different 1/12 scale racers showing up so far this season, if we held a 1/12 scale only race, I'm sure it would end up being more popular than races that offer 5 different classes, including a wide asortment of 1/10 and 1/12 scale cars, since other clubs seem to have difficulties attracting as many people we get every week for their trophy races. I agree with Jody that our path to success is due to us doing what we feel is best for our club, rather than catering to the vocal minority that thinks the way everyone else does things is best.
Jody's idea sounds good. Two days of straight up racing. We could still do prizes, draws and the like. Advertise to other clubs but no catering.
If this was shown to have some interest what about renting out perks or the like for a two day event? I guess cost would dictate moving to another facility to accomadate others.

We could still have a couple of 12th scale classes like stock and 19t. I like the idea of seeing pearkes could have us for 2-days sometime. It would make for a beautiful 12th scale venue and could hold 500 entries.

I think we have more flexibility with the schedule on a long weekend possibly? Would that also allow people to not have to rush for the ferry on a Sunday if they don't want to and get one on a Monday morning? I guess the problem with that theory, however, is that after Christmas I don't think there is anything until Easter for long weekends...
I agree that we are sucessful in our hosting last year - one of the best races of the summer. Our formula, however, was a little more flexible that just running what we run all the time. IIRC we ran 19 turn and mod. We should consider doing the same for our 1/12th scale if there is some demand for it.
10th scale would be a big draw and my inital reaction is to include it. Thinking it through however its probably best not to. The way to be sucessful it to run what we know is sucessful for us as a club. It would truely be a weak track if we were to build it for the 10th scale cars and ran 12th on it. For the very same reasons we don't run 10th on the weekends are the same reasons we shouldn't be hosting 10th.
It would be nice to be able to host 10th scale but our club is set up for 12th scale. Many of the club racers have no or very little experience runing 10th scale cars on carpet. I would like to see us promote not just the local R/C community but our regional R/C community as well. I don't think we are presently in a position to promote regional carpet racing because the popularity of our 12th scale isn't that big elsewhere. Of course we would love to see as many regional clubs and racers as possible come out to our event. I think our best venue would be to promote a tri-city event for on-road in the summer to help promote regional R/C racing.
Hey, all.
I think that we'd need to be a little more creative on the issue of trophy/no trophy. Otherwise, why don't we save ourselves the time and simply give the same guys who always win the trophy and call it a day? It's predictable.
What if we had something like a pairing of A, B, C and D ( or a completely random draw although an argument could be made that A,B,C D would make it more ven) drivers to form a team and then race in something like a triple knock out/elimination or something like that. I dunno. I have no solid offerings here, but I think that the outcome of a 12th scale stock race is quite predictable even with the hand full of guys that might (or might not) come over from the mainland or elsewhere.
That would be a very cool idea for just a club two day event. I think the competitive spirit and guys coming from out of town would probably be more likely to be involved if it was just straight up racing for individuals.
I really like the idea though - just not sure how to implement it exactly... it does kind of tie into our enduro theme we've been kicking around....
well like kurt said, would be good to have it on a long weekend. unfortuanltly there is none after xmas till easter. Well we should looki into have it in FEB. As alberta has a long weekend called family day. We might get a couple of guy's from Edmonton. As they have a strong 12 scale scene. Hey just a though. I also beleive it better to start planning sooner than later. would suck trying to organize this in one weekend. I would love to see a tenetetive date. then strart to promote it . if we get a low intereste. then we can cancel it.
of well i'm just babling on.
