Title: Power supply
Post by: DekelzMan on January 17, 2006, 06:13:49 PM
I'm going to start tinkering on a project and would like to get my hands on an efficient power supply that will yield 12v, 30 amps. It doesn't have to be pretty, but smaller is better..

Any ideas where I can acquire such an animal for a reasonable price ?

Thanks for any info anyone may have.

Hey Mick,

I may have just the right thing for ya. 450 watt supply with a small 12cm fan. It was originally purchased just a few months ago for my home computer, but has since been replaced. I will bring it next Saturday if you like or shoot me a pm if you would like to try sooner. It's basically new in original box.

Just let me know, and hopefully this will be the answer.

cheers,
Mike

Check the specs on that supply - its unlikely that its 30amps at 12V....

Trackmate sells a 45 amp power supply, the owner Daniel Groulx is a good guy, I have raced slotcars with him. They are located in Surrey BC.

Thanks for the link Dave, that would do the job nicely. Mike, are you able to get the specs of that power supply you were talking about ? I'd rather give yours a shot before I investigate anything else.

Mike's talking about a computer power supply.

Those pump the majority of their juice out of the 5 volt lines.  I can tell you now without looking at the specs that it's not what you're looking for.

Besides, you said efficient, and in order to get a computer power supply to regulate half decently, you need a big wasteful load on it, which kills the efficiency.

I'll give Mike a chance for rebuttal...:)

Just a note, Daniel Groulx of Trackmate is an eletronic technician, so if you give him a call he may be able to help you with your project.
