Hey kids,
So I have my 1/10th touring car now for the coming season. I am really pumped to get practicing with it and setting it up (it needs a lot of setup right now).
The car is assembled, but the previous owner just had soldered everything together directly. As I am new to these and haven't soldered in about 10 years, I am very cautious about taking an iron to the electronic things.
I picked up an iron and some solder and I am going to get myself some clamps and stuff to help out tonight and I am going to try to solder some plugs onto the batter, motor and ESC so that I can quickly connect/disconnect those parts. I am going to try it out myself, but I am not overly confident and don't want to damage anything. So, if I have difficulties and have to bail out, I was wondering if I could bring it to the 1/12th race tomorrow afternoon (nice and early before anyone is qualifying or anything) and perhaps one of you more experienced guys could help me get these soldered on? Once I see an expert do it, I am sure it will be a lot easier to do myself.
If anyone's willing to do that, please PM me and let me know your name and stuff so I can find you if needed and what time you'll be there.
Thanks for all the help you guys have provided.
oh, I am subscribing to this thread, so you can just reply here if that's easier than a PM. thanks again!
I'm sure anyone would be willing to help you out, but there's some people it might be best if you stayed clear from when it comes to soldering help, even if they're willing to help you.
Any of the top guys at racing will be able to either help you out or direct you to someone who would give you good advice. However, at least half the guys at racing have no business holding a soldering iron, even though they do it regularly, and are quite willing to help out!
Sage advice Tom - especially when it comes to soldering batterys....
Race day probably isn't the best day to get it done. It will take some time and its better to get it done properly than as a rush job. We can figure something out when you pick the charger and batteries up.
Oh and bring your iron (if its a gun take it back) by and I'll tell you if its any good. Need a big tip for most of the stuff we do.

But I don't know who the "top guys" I should talk to are. Gimme some names?

That sounds good Kurk, just let me know when I can come get that. I am free all weekend save Saturday evening for the Salmon Kings game.
Some "Top Guy's"
Jody is a good one
Haddow is another pretty good one.

Feel free to drop by before the game if that works for you - we start track set up at 3:30
i wanna know who Tom thinks SHOULD NOT be around soldering iron.............just curious

I will see you there, then, probably closer to 4.

The poeple that dont clean the tip and never tin anything.
Soldering without solder, a frequent phenomenon.
Dog, you are on the list (of people to steer clear of) I am sure.
Haddow
i can see why.......... i always have problems soldering........well till i turned 10 anyway...........
There's also people who, it appears to me, think that you generate the heat to solder with in a similar way that you start a fire by rubbing sticks together. The list of amazing flawed concepts people appear to use while attempting to solder is quite extensive.
huh?........... you mean if you push harder it doesnt get hotter.?........no wonder i have been un able to solder anything
I took a course in precision soldering with the navy guys and have been doing soldering forever, even surface mount and microprocessor but when I am at the track, I don't really care how things should be soldered.
Of course, the right tools help too.
magilla, how many tips did you go through?
well, it isn't pretty much I managed to do what I had set out to. I went to he shack and picked up a "helping hand" device which is a couple of aligator clips on a heavy base and i got a solder sucker and some other bits I needed and sat down at it tonight and, while it's a miserable job of soldering, I'm sure, it works.
I put plugs on each of the battery packs and the motor and the appropriate females on the speed controller connections. I wired it all up and we have lift off! I am pretty excited to actually have done it all.
I found the steering totally messed up at first and sorted it out by messing with steering settings on the radio.
So, the car is driving now, I just need to mount the speed controller with some velcro tape tomorrow and then I am going to take it out for an innaugural run if it's dry. it needs major setup still, and cleaning, but i want to give it a fun run before i get into that.
shoo goo much better than velcro tape ;)
If you can't resist the temptation of running your nice carbon fiber chasis around the gravely grimmy roads (we actually clean our track) put something on the bottom of the chasis to protect it like mylar or polycarbonate film.
Servo tape is a better option for a semi-permanat attachement of your ESC, receiver, etc... Shoe Goo is the way to go though....
I know you are eager to play but I'd really really recomend getting someone to solder the car properly.... a incorrect soldering job is kind of like using old rusty pipes for fuel line in a gasoline car - might work but its a bad idea...
you should have your female plug end on the battery and male on the speed control for the battery. and male on the motor and female on the speed control. for your moter conections. this way if something metal touches your battery connector you have less chance of shorting your packs. plus this way you know when plugs on your speed control is for which.
