just wondering if there is any reason  an ESC should not be mounted so it is touching the receiver?

The ESC, especially modern high-frequency ones (that is, ones made since the early '90's) are a source of radio interferance.  The proximity of the source of the interferance to your receiver will dictate the amount of problems it will cause; there is an inverse-square relationship (meaning if you double the distance, there is 1/4 the interferance).

So, the more distance you have between your receiver and everything else in your car electronic, the better, but I would be more concerned about keeping distance between your motor and your receiver than yuor speed controller and your receiver.

unfortunatly my receiver must touch the esc but it is a quantum 2(if that means anything) and the esc is between the motor and receiver and there is aprox 1/4inch between servo and receiver..................there just isnt any damn room in this T2.............hopefully there wont be any problems...........thanks for the info Tom

Just test it out - if it doesn't glitch you're laughing.  Try twisting the motor wires together - helps cancel the noise out...
