I think Craig is handing out the motors on the first night of racing.  This is being done to try and keep everything as fair as possible as not everyone would have an opportunity to get their motor ahead of time.

And don't worry, we'll allow lots of extra time on Saturday night (wherever we are racing) for everyone to prepare their new motors.  And there will be lots of support from the old-timers when it comes to helping out the newcomers with their motors.

Just remember, the first night of racing is always a little hairy schedule-wise.

As for batteries, if you are a newcomer and have NO batteries for this Saturday night then let me know and I'll make arrangements to get you your batteries ahead of time.  People with batteries from last year are encouraged to just use their last-year's packs for the first night.  We currently do not have enough packs to fill everyone's orders so that's why it's being done in this way.  Hopefully the rest of the packs will arrive this week so that I can get everyone their packs on the first night.

I know some of you will whine about this, but just suck it up for now ok?  We'll have ample time for everyone to get prepared on Saturday night.

Thanks,
Blake

personally i dont really care about the motors but i do not have any batteries from last year so if i can batters so i have time to put them together or if someone has a pack or 2 to lend for the first nite

Hey Doug,

Ok, we can meet on Thurs (evening), Fri (evening), or Sat (morning/afternoon) and I can get you your batteries.  That goes for all of you who legitimately have NO batteries to use this Saturday night.

Battery Bar Shortage

SMC does not have any battery bars in stock so the club has a huge shortage of battery bars at the moment.  I would recommend that everyone buy some battery bars from the Shaver Shop so that you'll be able to assemble your new packs.

Motor Preparation Tips

For those curious about what they might want to do with their motor when they get it on Saturday night.  It's really quite simple:

1.  Come to the races with a pair of Reedy 767 brushes.  These are available at the Shaver Shop for a really good deal ($3.50 per pair I think).

2.  Install these brushes on the motor.  This can be done in about 30 seconds using the Frank Calandra "non-solder" approach.  Ask around on Saturday night (Me, Craig, Jody) and we'll show you just how easy this technique is.

3.  Grab some motor springs from your summer stock motor incase the handout motors do not come with springs.

4.  You're done.  These motors come with pre-installed capacitors so you don't even have to worry about that.

5.  Optionally, you can true the commutator right off the bat.  I don't normally do this but I've heard that it's a good thing to do to make up for any manufacturing flaws with the comm.

Simple, simple - shouldn't take anyone more than ten minutes to get their new motor race-ready.

Hey Guys,
For those that don't have battery bars, DON'T PANIC.  Use braid.  It works fine.  It should be available at an electronics shop. Just tin it and install.  If you can't find that, use heavy guage wire until bars are in hand.

I've got some heavy braid that works very well for batteries.  Remind me and I'll bring some.  Its just as good as the bars and lighter.  The only "problem" is they have powdered flux so the solder will wick and there will be a fair amount of flux once you solder them on.  Easy enough to clean with some alcohol.

Wicking with braid is a good thing, since it will strengthen the pack like bars.

I mostly use tape and paper mache. I find that it heats up after a while, but the assortment of colors is terrific. Besides, you don't need a soldering gun and you can replace the tape easily. I find, however, that the conductivity is lacking and you'll probably want more punch, but on the upside, it saves a bucket load on spare parts.
