star winding

 i would like to know what star winding is ,anyone know? apparently its a type of brushless motor???

Yeah, its how the windings of the motor are organized.

A star is formed by making a triangle with the 3 different phases. (Kinda looks like the Jewish star). Its a WYE configuration because all 3 phases are connected to each other. This means there is no 4th wire for a neutral. It works exactly like a 440 3phase circuit.

You can also use a Delta configuration too.

Only Star/Wye  (Roar calls them "Y" motors) are allowed to be used for competition. The 2009 ROAR rule book specifies that Delta motors may not be used.

So Yes. I believe all RC Car brushless motors are "star" wound motors.

Its to bad that Delta motors are not allowed, they produce alot more RPM, and less torque then a star wound motor, so the roll out would be closer to a brushed 27T.

Hi, Doug.

Yes, the PULSE (coming out of our tuning laboratory in the very near future) and DUO lineups are Wye winds as they are pretty much standard with the exception of some Castle and sensorless manufacturers. Shawn is correct regarding standards. See you at the track!
