2007 Kamloops Mid-Winter Challenge
« on: November 23, 2006, 11:01:45 PM »
Hi guys and gals,

Just thought I would give you all a heads up on our annual "Mid-Winter Challenge" Race.  This year, it will be held on February 9th, 10th & 11th, 2007.  All the Touring Car Classes: Stock, Mod, 19 Turn and Novice.  Also 1/10th Scale Pan Car and yes....19 Turn, 1/12th Scale Class.  We now have a 1/12th Scale class here in Kamloops that races on a regular basis so bring up the those 4 cell rockets and "Lay The Smack Down"!

This race always turns-up big numbers as far as participation go's and excitement and close competition are never hard to find.  Please tell your friends, spread the word and make plans to attend this race here in the "Tournament Capital of Canada".  More details to come soon.

See you at the races......

RACE FEES:

First Class = $35
Second Class = $20
Third Class = $10

CLASS UPDATE:

Novice Class = $30 Everyone running in this class takes home an award.

Aside from running 19 Turn 1/12th Scale we will also run a Stock 1/12th Scale class if there is enough interest (5 car Minimum). You need to PRE-REGISTER here or via email. bwende@shaw.ca

There is apparently a strong interest in the new Associated 1/18th Scale, Micro Touring Car from some of the guys down on the coast. Again, we will consider running this class if we get 5 or more cars, PRE-REGISTERED.

We will have a guest Race Director to run the show this year but more details on this later. If you would like to pre-register, you may do so on this thread or by email. bwende@shaw.ca There will be no entry form.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Eight classes?  Seven sets of tripple A's?  That's 22 A mains!  If you have enough for an average of 2 heats per class, you're in the neighborhood of 30 mains!  That's a whole lot of racing.

Problem is, I always feel like I'm qualifying in tripple A's.

lets not hijack the thread though this is for the Kamloops race only and they have stated the format. Lets move the discussion of alternative formats elsewhere.

Hey Phil....got ya down.  Looks like we only need 1 or 2 more Pro-10's to run but I will keep ya in the loop.  We will have to talk about this one....Triple A-Mains in all classes....could be a bit much...you may be right but we will work it out.

Merry Christmas to all......

Hey Phil, can I have more detailed info on your registration please?

We plan on running Triple "A" Mains in all classes but Novice and 1/18th Open.

Jody:  You can run a 2 cell Lipo in your Mod Touring Car.  Generally, the roads are pretty good this time of year....usually the bad storms have passed by then so you shouldn't have any problems getting here.  Practice on the Friday will be from around 5:30pm to about 10:00pm.  There will be a short practice on the Saturday morning.

I am now taking Pre-Regitration for this race so either put your info down here, by email or on the "RC Tech Site" under "Canadian RC Scene".

For those who are confirmed they are going (Blake, Mick, Me, Jody and Daryl @ 90%) it looks as if we'll only be taking Blake's Van since Chris is apparently likely not going now nor is Kurk. As such I've given up my Jeep for the weekend since we can fit 5 in in the Van with 6 being a tight fit but apparently doable in a pinch. I had to make this decision today with the information I have.

Hey guys,

I think we can fit six people and equipment in the van.  In the summer we fit five people and equipment.  It was tight, but we had more equipment than we'll need for this race.  We do NOT have to bring tables, chairs, or tents.  That will save a lot of room.

I will go have a look inside the van to figure out just how many Rubbermaid boxes and toolboxes I think we can fit in there.

I'll also check the tire size.

Hey guys,

Daryl, the van has these tires:  P235/75 R15
Let me know if you find those chains, and whether you think they'll work or not.  I guess we could test fit them next Saturday if we had to.

As for the van capacity:  I just went outside with my R/C gear to test fit stuff.  There is room behind the back seat to stack nine of the big Rubbermaid containers.  There is room under the two bench seats for half-height Rubbermaids, or duffle bags, or knapsacks, etc....  There will be room on the bench seats for two or three more large bins/boxes, and room on the floor behind the drivers seat for another large box.  This will still allow six big guys to sit comfortably and safely.  We'll probably want to partner Chris and Mick with Daryl and Phil, and then give Jody the front seat....

So, assuming we all have the equivalent of two large boxes/totes and one duffle/knapsack, I'm pretty sure it's doable.

Blake, I have a set of chains that I used on my old ambulance van. I can't remember if they are 15" or 16", you can try them out if you want. Let me know and I'll bring them into work and meet you somewhere.

OK, Blake. I'll make the hotel reservations this week. I'll also make Ferry reservations for the 9th  at 9:00AM for 5 adults and one child  8O . Is the Van considered overheight? I will also bring my assured loading card for the trip back since timing is unpredictable.

Re: cargo, I'll also be bringing the Robi Dyno w/laptop and the tire lathe w/portable battery power rather than using the one off the van, so I may end up with one of my black hard cases to fit those items in. At least other IROCC guys at the hotel won't need to bring a tire lathe or dyno. Sound OK?

Dave, thanks for the offer.  I may take you up on those chains depending on what Daryl finds.

Phil, the van is NOT overheight so just get a regular car reservation.  It'll be nice to have those assured loading tickets for the return trip!  Good to know that you're bringing a tire lathe... we should need only one of those.

I assume someone will bring a motor lathe...?  I do not own one.

Chains were right where I left them. One problem is that the size label has disappeared but I am sure they will fit because the tires I had on the Dakota were 235x75x15 but probably best if we double check to see if they fit- hopefully we won't need them!!

I looked up all of the recommended hotels close to the track and they're not in the same price range or part of the city as the summer. We also don't have the minimum number of room bookings to qualify for the discounted rates. Soooo, the question is: how much per night would you be able to spend. Set the limit and I can book from there. With 5 of us staying together the best bet is to get two rooms and split the cost five ways. Either that or we move out of the area to a place matching our budget. Your call.

are there not 6 people staying together? I would like to not be in a 3 to a room scenario. Will pay whatever I have to pay. The hotels we were in during the summer were not too far out of town so if we have to drive 10 minutes to get to the track (to save money) that is no big deal to me.

Hey, Jody.

I understood that Chris has arrangements with Dwayne. I'm not too concerned over price either. I've asked Brent for specific address details so that we can make an informed choice. I believe that Ken and the boys are staying out near the Comfort Inn or something to that effect.

Phil.

Chris is staying with Dwayne Flodell from Airdrie.  So, it's just five of us that need rooms.  I'm open to any price-range, but I'd probably rather sleep on the floor/cot to save a $100/night.

I'm with you Phil, price doesn't matter that much but like Jody I don't like sleeping in a chair or on the floor.  Driving 10 minutes to the track is nothing after driving 3-4hrs to get to Kamloops and also that is a lot less distance than we all drive now to get to our track. I suggest booking 3 rooms, we can always cancel 1 if need be. I should know by Weds. whether I can make it for sure.
Blake, have you asked Brent about estimated finish time on Sunday or whether they will cut the program short if need be.

Hey I think Phil had talked to him about it and 4 pm was the target. Not 100% about the actual time quoted but they are aware of the time constraint.

Hey, Guys.

Nope. I was repeating that Blake was going to ask Brent about this in hopes of making it back to Victoria that night. Daryl feels this may/may not impact his travel arrangements but will know on Wed. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey, Guys.

I've booked us in to the Travelodge Mountainview in Kamloops and it looks to be very close to the track. The price is lower than the other locations I've explored, too. I'll share the costs with you on Saturday to see if you are OK with it.

Here is the link to the Goodle Map for the track location at the school: http://maps.google.ca/maps?near=2080+Tremerton+Dr&q=2080+Tremerton+Dr&f=p&btnG=Search+Maps&rl=1

Here is the Google Map for the Travelodge: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1225+Rogers+Way,+Kamloops,+Canada

Here is the link to the virtual tour of the facility: http://www.seevirtual360.com/themes/35/hotel.aspx?listingID=1352

I have booked Daryl into a two bed standard room. Blake and Jody have a two queen bed room with kitchenette. I have Mick and I booked into a two bedroom suite - all of these are on the ground floor on the same side of the building. I asked for the two bedroom suite to give a common workspace and area for the shared pit items. I have asked that they put a 6' table and several folding chairs there, too.

Let me know if you have any questions at all. We can change the reservation with no worries.

Later.

For some reason the link to the tack doesn't work so simply use the Map search function to locate: 2080 Tremerton Drive Kamloops BC. Essentially it's just up the hill.

Turn down Rogers Way and follow to Hwy 5A.  Turn right at the lights onto HWY 5A and follow this highway up the hill until you reach the second set of lights at the Summit Drive Intersection.  Turn left here onto Summit Drive and follow Summit Drive down to Tremerton Dr.  You will see the Summit Drive Baptist Church on your right.  Turn right here onto Tremerton Dr. and follow down towards the end of the street, where you will see McGowan Park Elementary School on your right.  2080 Tremerton Dr.  You made it!

This should help eh?  :D

Sounds good Phil.  Good idea with the communal work area.

As for the Sunday afternoon schedule, Brent is aware of the ferry issue, and he is going to talk to his club about it.  He figures that we can probably just start a little earlier on Sunday in order to finish up on time for us.

Perhaps the classes that nobody from Victoria is registered in could run their mains last in case people have to leave prior to the last race wrapping up.

Hey, Brent. I was of the understanding that you had several guys in Kamloops plus Mick and I  - which would be the minimum requirement. I also saw on RC Tech net that there was a crew from Seattle that was intending on coming to race Pro 10. Perhaps you could approach them directly as they did post on the forum. Personally, if the class doesn't run I will seriously reconsider the trip as may be the case with Mick. I don't know. Anyway, please do keep us in the loop. Bye for now.

19 Turn Pro-10 is a go with 6 cars now registered.  Just need to get some more 1/18th Scale Micros or it will not be run.  Sorry guys, I have been away from the thread for a couple of days I guess with work and all.

Take care and see you all soon.....

Jody is meeting me at my house at 7:30AM on Friday.  Chris, we'll swing by and pick you up at 7:45AM.  We'll arrive at Phil's house at 8:00AM.  Daryl and Mick will meet us at Phil's at this time as well.  We'll load up, and get in the ferry line before 8:30AM or the reservation will be void.

Hey, Blake.

I'm not quite sure that you could make the journey with a stop prior to 8, Blake, if you're loading up at your place at 7:30. Your call ... but that's tight at best!

Is anyone planning on bringing along a long extension cord and power bar?  Brent was recommending that we do so.  I can bring a power bar, but I don't have a long extension cord.

I'll not know until I pack up tomorrow evening Blake. I have onèbut I need to check on space in the pitbox. I'll be racing three cars in three classes so the spare parts and tires are taking up a fair amount of space. Perhaps we could simply stow it in the Van. It only has one female plug, though.

Hey fellas,

If anyone needs anything from me tonight, I'll be out until about 11PM.  You're free to call me up until 1:00AM as I'll be up late getting everything packed up.

Otherwise, I'll see Jody at my house at 7:20AM tomorrow, Chris in his driveway at 7:40AM, and everyone else at Phil's at 8:00AM.

We all held our own and brought back some hardware. Some did better than others though. Results are posted at- http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141248&page=6&pp=30
Awesome race, great having a imported race director. Something we may have to look at for Speedweekend 2007.
